ブレードや耐熱布を用いるような摺接によるクリ
ーニング方法を用いると、表面が比較的硬く平滑
に形成されるトナー像形成体や定着押圧ローラの
クリーニングとは異なつて、クリーニング効果が
充分に得られないばかりでなく、表面の転写層が
損傷し易いと云う問題がある。そこで従来、中間
転写体のクリーニングには、USP3649992号明細
書に記載されているように、中間転写体に金属円
筒を接触回転させてクリーニングする方法が行わ
れている。この方法は、シリコンゴム等の転写層
に対するトナーの付着力よりも金属に対する付着
力が大であることを利用したものであり、中間転
写層に残留するトナーが少ないことから、それ程
短時間には金属円筒のクリーニング作用が低下す
るようにはならない。しかしそれでも、金属円筒
へのトナー付着量が増加して来ると、通常、トナ
ー付着量が金属円筒の回転軸方向に均一とはなら
ずに、凹凸が発生するようになるから、中間転写
体表面との密着性が悪くなり、クリーニング作用
が低下するようになる。

状に形成されていて、7は中間転写体6を感光体
ドラム1に圧接する転写押圧ローラ、8は内部に
赤外ランプや抵抗発熱体のような熱源8Aを有し
て中間転写体6上のトナー像が記録紙Pに転写、
定着され易いように中間転写体6を加熱する加熱

るバルト基体の表面にシリコンゴムやフツ素系ゴ
ム等の耐熱弾性体層を転写層として設けた構造か
らなる。また、第2図の中間転写体6はローラに
形成されていて、これは加熱ローラ8の表面にシ
リコンゴムやフツ素系ゴム等の転写層を設けたよ
うな構造即ち、内部に熱源6Aを有する金属ある

ード12に圧接させてもよい。その場合も掻き落
し中にトナーが固化して滞積したトナーの掻き落
しは効果的に行われる。クリーニング部材11に
滞積したトナーの掻き落しは、トナー像形成体1
から中間転写体6にトナー像が転写されることの
ないような駆動段階、あるいは記録装置が記録プ
ロセスを行つていないような休止段階で行われ
る。
