[Object of the Invention] The present invention relates to a novel liquid crystal compound and a liquid crystal composition containing the compound. Liquid crystal materials and their compositions can be used in various display devices by utilizing the anisotropy of dielectric constant (abbreviated as Δε) and the anisotropy of optical refractive index (abbreviated as Δn) in the liquid crystal phase. The display method is
It can be divided into various types such as TN type (twisting type), DS type (dynamic scattering type), guest-host type, and DAP type. The liquid crystal materials used alone cannot withstand practical use due to the characteristics of the display element, such as liquid crystal temperature range, operating voltage, response performance, etc., and for practical purposes, several types of liquid crystal compounds or liquid crystal compounds are used. It is used in combination with a non-liquid crystal compound. An object of the present invention is to provide a compound that can improve various characteristics of a display element when used as a component of a liquid crystal composition, and a liquid crystal composition containing the compound. [Structure of the invention] The present invention is based on the general formula (In the formula, R 1 and R 2 each independently have a carbon number of 1
~12 alkyl groups. ) trans-2-{4-(5-alkylpyrimidinyl-2)phenyl}-5-alkyl-
A 1,3-dioxane compound and a liquid crystal composition containing the compound. An example of the method for producing the compound of the present invention is shown in the following reaction formula. (In the formula, R 1 and R 2 each independently have a carbon number of 1
~12 alkyl groups. ) First, p-substituted benzonitrile ( ) is reacted with hydrogen chloride gas and ethanol in ethanol to obtain p-substituted benzimidate hydrochloride ( ). This compound () is then reacted with ammonia gas in an alcohol solvent to obtain p-substituted benzamidine hydrochloride (). Next, compound () and α-alkyl-β-dimethylaminoacrolein () are subjected to a condensation cyclization reaction in the presence of a suitable base catalyst to obtain the desired compound (). As the base catalyst, alkali metal alcoholates, sodium hydroxide, 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undecene, etc. can be used. The compound of the present invention is a liquid crystalline compound having a wide nematic phase in a relatively high temperature range. The compound has a low viscosity for a compound having three 6-membered rings, and is compatible with other existing liquid crystal compounds such as esters, Schiff bases, azoxys, biphenyls, cyclohexanes, pyridines, pyridimines, etc. Good compatibility with liquid crystal compounds. The compound is stable against heat, light, electricity, air and moisture, and is colorless in the liquid crystal phase. The dielectric anisotropy (hereinafter abbreviated as Δε) in the liquid crystal phase of the compound of the present invention is positive, and the anisotropy value of the optical refractive index (hereinafter abbreviated as Δn) is also large. Therefore, by utilizing the properties of the compound of the present invention described above and mixing the compound as a component with existing liquid crystal materials, it is possible to construct a liquid crystal composition suitable for various liquid crystal display devices. . for example,
When the compound of the present invention is used as a component of a liquid crystal composition for a TN display element, the viscosity of the composition does not increase significantly, and the driving voltage of the display element hardly increases, and the operating temperature of the display element can be maintained. The range can be extended to higher temperatures. In addition to the compound represented by the formula (), the liquid crystal composition of the present invention preferably contains a component having a liquid crystal phase in a low temperature range to widen the practical temperature range. [Examples] The present invention will be explained in detail below with reference to Examples, but the present invention is not limited to these Examples. Example 1 Trans-2-{4-(5-ethylpyrimidinyl-2)phenyl}-5-propyl-1,3-dioxane 4-(trans-5-propyl-1,3-dioxanyl-2)benzamidine hydrochloride 5.0g
(0.018 mol) and α-ethyl-β-dimethylaminoacrolein 2.2 g (0.018 mol), sodium methylate 1.4 g (0.026 mol) and anhydrous methanol 50
ml of sodium methylate solution. The mixture was then boiled for 2 hours with stirring, and then methanol was distilled off. Add 100 ml of water and 100 ml of toluene to the reaction residue to extract the product, wash the extract with water,
The toluene layer was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and then the toluene was distilled off, and the remaining solid was recrystallized three times with ethanol to obtain the desired trans-2.
-{4-(5-ethylpyrimidinyl-2)phenyl}-5-propyl-1,3-dioxane 3.9 g
(0.012mol) was obtained. The elemental analysis values of this compound were in good agreement with the theoretical values as shown below.
