と、前記液晶セルと一方の偏光板との間に配置さ
れた位相差補償素子とを備えた液晶表示装置にお
いて、前記位相差補償素子を、一面をテーパー面
とした一端から他端に向かつて肉厚が薄くなる２
枚の位相差板で構成し、この両位相差板は、その
テーパー面同士を対向させ、かつ一方の位相差板
の厚肉側と他方の位相差板の薄肉側とを対向させ
て重ねるともに、この両位相差板の光学軸の方向
を互いに平行にしたことを特徴とする液晶表示装
