If scratches or alignment stripes are generated or static electricity generated during rubbing causes a part of the alignment film to be electrostatically destroyed, scratches, stripes, or misalignment can be seen as a liquid crystal electro-optical device, and good display image quality can be obtained. There was a problem that I could not do it.

Rubbing treatment is performed by contacting the formed metal plate and by providing a connecting portion made of a conductive material from the metal plate to the substrate electrode, and then a projection formed on the corner of the substrate or on the substrate surface during the rubbing treatment. The rubbing cloth damaged by was regenerated every time the rubbing roll was rotated, and the surface of the rubbing roll and the surface of the substrate were kept at the same potential to prevent the influence of static electricity generated during rubbing.

Number of display pixels 640
An STN liquid crystal electro-optical device having × 400 and 1/200 duty was manufactured. (Comparative Example 1) In order to make the surface of the rubbing roll and the surface of the substrate the same potential, a substrate having an electrode pattern in which all drive electrodes are short-circuited as shown in FIG. Was produced. A substrate having a similar drive electrode pattern was manufactured by a conventional method.
The results are shown in FIGS. FIG. 5 shows a liquid crystal electro-optical device manufactured by the method of the present invention, and FIG. 6 shows a display state when a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal electro-optical device manufactured by the conventional method. 6 shows scratches, alignment streaks, and alignment defects due to electrostatic breakdown of the alignment film, which are generated during rubbing treatment, but FIG. 5 shows good display image quality without scratches, alignment streaks, and alignment defects due to electrostatic breakdown. was gotten.
