Using a storage-type fluorescent substance (hereinafter simply referred to as "fluorescent substance"),
A radiographic system has been developed in which a radiographic image is recorded on this, the radiographic image is read out, and this is reproduced and recorded as a visible image on a recording material such as a photographic film. This system was proposed by the applicant in Japanese Patent Application No. 53-84741 (see Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 55-12429), in which radiation transmitted through an object is absorbed by a phosphor, and then this phosphor is removed. It is excited by a certain kind of energy to radiate the radiant energy accumulated in the fluorescent body as fluorescent light, and the fluorescent light is detected and imaged.

A radiographic system using this phosphor has an advantage that an image can be recorded over an extremely wide radiation exposure area as compared with a conventional radiographic system using silver salt photography, which is very practical. It is of high value. That is, in this fluorescent material, the amount of light emitted by excitation after storage is proportional to the amount of radiation exposure, which is proportional to a very wide range. Therefore, this amount of light emission is converted into an electric signal by the photoelectric conversion means, and this electric signal is converted into an electric signal. If a visible image is reproduced and recorded on a recording material such as a photographic film by using it, an image having an appropriate density can be obtained regardless of the exposure amount. In addition,
At the time of this reproduction / recording, the amplification rate at the time of signal processing is adjusted so that the level of the electric signal obtained over a wide range is converted into a range identifiable by optical density so that an appropriate image can be obtained.

In practice, the range of radiation exposure dose is limited by the dynamic range of the electrical signal system used for this. In the experiment, even if the exposure amount was changed over a range of about 3 digits, that is, even if the exposure amount of the radiation was changed to 1: 1000, it was possible to obtain a photograph having an appropriate density.

As described above, in the radiographic system using the fluorescent substance as described above, an image having an appropriate density can be finally obtained even when the exposure amount is largely changed, so that there are various advantages in practical use.
For example, if there is unevenness in the exposure during shooting between shooting shots, or if there is an exposure error, there is no problem because it can be finally finished to the same level of density, and failure in exposure conditions will not occur. It can be virtually eliminated. In addition, depending on the subject, the exposure amount must be adjusted so that the density of the image produced by conventional radiographic systems will be easy to see, such as the one requiring a larger exposure amount or the one requiring a smaller exposure amount. In some cases, it is not necessary to pay attention to the setting of the exposure condition, because even if the image is taken under the same conditions, the reproduction can be performed at a density that is easy to see in the subsequent reproduction. Furthermore, in the conventional system, it was necessary to use films with different sensitivities individually for screens with different sensitivities, but with this system, it is possible to handle different screens and different shooting conditions using one type of film. You don't have to prepare many kinds of films because you can.

In short, in the radiographic system using the fluorescent substance as described above, the exposure amount over an extremely wide range is temporarily accumulated in the fluorescent substance as image information, and the final visible image is reproduced and recorded on the recording material. At that time, since the image information is converted into an electric signal and recorded, the density of the reproduced image finally obtained can always be finished in an easy-to-see density range suitable for the purpose by appropriately adjusting the level of the electric signal. You can do it.

That is, the device of the present invention, the radiation image information is recorded, the emitted light is in the wavelength range of 300 ~ 500 nm, the storage type phosphor material is scanned by the excitation light in the wavelength range of 600 ~ 700 nm, the phosphor Readout means for reading out the image information from the light emission amount of the material and outputting an electric signal of a level corresponding to the light emission amount, means for signal processing the electric signal output from the read means, and control by the signal processed signal Apparatus for reproducing radiation image information recorded on a storage-type fluorescent material, which comprises a modulator to be recorded, and a recording unit which is modulated by the modulator and scans the recording material to record an image on the recording material. In the reproduction image reproduced and recorded on the recording material, the signal processing unit reproduces and records the electric signal of the maximum level corresponding to the maximum value of the light emission amount in an optical density of 1.5 to 2.8. The density of the recording material is converted to a level at which the recording means records an image, and the electric signal of the minimum level corresponding to the substantially minimum value of the light emission amount is fogged from the fog density of the recording material in the reproduced image. The recording means converts into a level at which an image is recorded at a density up to 0.3 higher than the optical density, and an electric signal of a level between these maximum and minimum level values is increased. It is characterized in that it includes signal conversion means for converting so that the density of the reproduced image monotonically increases accordingly.

Incidentally, the maximum and minimum of the electrical signal or the amount of light emission of the fluorescent substance in the above method and device do not mean literally the maximum and minimum in the image information accumulated in the fluorescent substance, but the radiation. It means the maximum and minimum of the image portion to be finally reproduced as an image. In other words, the actual fluorescent substance also contains, as image information, information or parts other than the image of the subject to be finally reproduced, and this is a part that is not related to the image of the subject to be reproduced and observed. Therefore, it is desirable to process the target image excluding the maximum and minimum ranges of the target image targeted for the signal processing. In the present invention, both the maximum and the minimum are referred to as the target image. It means the maximum and the minimum among them, that is, the substantial maximum and the minimum. For example, in the chest radiograph, the background outside the human body or the portion outside the lung field corresponds to the portion to be excluded in this case.

Although various methods can be considered as the maximum and minimum methods, for example, instantaneous light emission of a fluorescent substance as proposed by the present applicant in Japanese Patent Application No. 53-122882 (see Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 55-50180). Two-dimensional detector for the method of using light, the method of using the read signal when reading the amount of emitted light for reproduction, the amount of irradiation radiation to the fluorescent body or the amount of transmitted radiation from the fluorescent body during imaging A method of estimating the amount of light emitted from the fluorescent body by monitoring with, a fluorescent sheet for monitoring is placed behind the fluorescent body at the time of photographing, and the fluorescent sheet for this monitor is caused to emit light by radiation, and this emission is 2 It is conceivable to adopt a method of estimating the light emission amount of the fluorescent substance by monitoring with a dimension detector. These methods will be described in detail later.

When specifically extracting the maximum and minimum level signals from the signal as described above, the maximum and minimum levels of the signal itself are not simply extracted as described above, but rather in the desired target image portion. You have to get the maximum and minimum levels. For this, for example, a method using a histogram is adopted. That is, the obtained signal level is stored in a memory, and the data in this memory is calculated by a computing device to create a histogram. This is a graph showing the frequency distribution of several mountain-shaped signals when a graph is plotted with the signal level on the horizontal axis and the frequency on the vertical axis, that is, a histogram, and the frequency of this histogram is 0 at the upper and lower ends.
It is possible to set the points falling to or to the points falling to about 5% of the maximum frequency as the maximum and minimum levels to be obtained.
When this histogram is used, it is also possible to empirically find the desired maximum and minimum level positions from the pattern on the histogram that is represented according to the type of radiation image. That is, for example, in a chest X-ray photograph, three histograms appear in the histogram, and the mountain with the highest signal level has the highest frequency, but this mountain indicates the lung field, and this mountain The bottom of the higher signal level, that is, the place where the frequency is 0 or 5% of the maximum frequency may be set as the maximum value. The mountain with the lowest height appears on the side with the lowest signal level, which indicates the spine, and the skirt on the side with the lowest signal level of this mountain should be the minimum value.

As another method, when reading the light emitted from the fluorescent substance by scanning, the target image portion and its target image portion can be detected from the change in the signal level when scanning the center of the image (or a location appropriately selected depending on the type of image). You can also know the maximum and minimum. For example, when a mammogram is reproduced from image information stored in a fluorescent body, if the center of the screen is scanned, the signal corresponds to the density in the reproduced image in the order of non-subject part, epidermis, adipose tissue, and mammary gland tissue. Indicates the level of light emission. At this time, the level greatly changes when the non-subject portion (that is, the portion having the largest amount of light emission outside the target) is changed to the skin. Since the skin has the highest density in the reproduced image in the target image, the level immediately after this level change can be adopted as the maximum value. Moreover, since the density of the mammary gland tissue is the lowest, the levels of the epidermis, the adipose tissue, and the mammary gland tissue are sequentially decreased, and the part where the level is completely decreased can be adopted as the minimum value.
Alternatively, it is possible to store the level in the vicinity where the minimum value appears and use the minimum value among them.

The signal is converted to a signal that can be reproduced and recorded at a density of fog +0.3. 1.5 to 2.8 is the maximum value of the optical density that is practically easy to read, and it is desirable to set it to the range of 1.8 to 2.6. The fog density-fogging degree + 0.3 is the minimum value at which the image can be read practically, and it is desirable to set the fog density-fogging density + 0.2 in the range.

To convert the signal level between the maximum value and the minimum value, simply connect the extreme values by a straight line (the optical axis is plotted on the vertical axis, and the horizontal axis is a straight line in the coordinate system representing the logarithmic value of the light emission amount, ie, the signal level) However, it is more preferable that the density is slightly lowered about the predetermined level in the meantime. This is particularly effective in improving diagnostic performance in the case of medical X-ray photography. This point will be described later in detail with reference to the drawings.

Further, between the maximum and minimum level values, γ, that is, the vertical axis represents the optical density (D) of the reproduced image, and the horizontal axis represents the logarithm of the signal level (log
It is necessary for reproducing the normal contrast that the gradient of the curve when S) is taken is always positive, and the rate of change of this gradient (γ) corresponds to at least the predetermined level in the reproduced image. Good results can be obtained by performing signal processing such that the density is positive or zero in the range of density lower than the density. In the concentration range higher than this predetermined level, that is, higher than the concentration corresponding to this predetermined level, γ
As long as is positive, there is no problem even if the rate of change of γ becomes slightly negative because the concentration is high.

In the present invention, the term “phosphor” refers to the first light or high-energy radiation after being irradiated with the first light or high-energy radiation and then stimulated (excited) by optical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, or electrical. It means a so-called stimulable phosphor that regenerates light corresponding to the irradiation amount of. Here, light includes visible light, ultraviolet light, and infrared light among electromagnetic radiation, and high-energy radiation includes X-rays, gamma rays, beta rays, alpha rays, neutron rays, and the like.

Excitation is preferably performed with light in the wavelength range of 600 to 700 nm, and the excitation light in this wavelength range is selected by selecting an excitation light source that emits light in this wavelength range, or an excitation light source having a peak in the above wavelength range. And a filter that cuts off light outside the wavelength range of 600 to 700 nm can be used in combination.

A Kr laser, various light emitting diodes, a He-Ne laser, a Rhodamine B dye laser, and the like are available as an excitation light source that can emit light in the above wavelength range. Further, since the tungsten yoyo lamp has a wavelength range from near-ultraviolet, visible to infrared, it can be used in combination with a filter that transmits light in the wavelength range of 600 to 700 nm.

However, CO 2 laser (wavelength: 10600 nm) and YAG laser (wavelength: 1060 nm) have a long wavelength and thus have poor light emission efficiency. Further, the temperature of the phosphor rises during scanning and the phosphor emits light other than at the scanning point. I can't.

It is as shown in FIG. 7 and FIG. 8 that the decay rate of the energy accumulated in the phosphor varies depending on the wavelength of the excitation light described above. Here, FIG. 7 shows how stored energy declines when light is emitted 2 hours after irradiation, with reference to light that is excited and emitted immediately after X-ray irradiation. 600 to 700 as excitation light
Surprisingly 750-800n when using light in the wavelength range of nm
Decrease in stored energy is less than that when light in the wavelength range of m is used. Therefore, the record on the phosphor can be stored for a long time.

The ratio of excitation energy to emission energy is 10 4 : 1 to 1
0 6: since it is usually of the order of 1, when the excitation light enters the light detector, S / N ratio is extremely lowered. If the emission is on the short wavelength side, the excitation light is on the long wavelength side, and the two are separated as much as possible to prevent the excitation light from entering the photodetector,
It is possible to prevent the above S / N ratio from decreasing.

For this purpose, it is desirable to use a phosphor whose emitted light is in the wavelength range of 300 to 500 nm. However, even if the phosphor emits light in the above wavelength range, the S / N ratio cannot be improved if the photodetector also measures light outside the wavelength range. Therefore, it is necessary that the phosphor emits light in the wavelength range of 300 to 500 nm and that the photodetector detects only light in this wavelength range.

When the light emission from the above three types of phosphors is measured by the photo b of b, the wavelength characteristics of I ′, II ′, and III ′ shown in d are obtained. In this, a part of the excitation light is included in the emitted light as noise. It becomes difficult to separate the two, and the S / N ratio drops extremely.

FIG. 1 is a graph showing the relationship between the level (S) of the electric signal representing the image information obtained from the amount of light emitted from the fluorescent substance and the optical density (D) finally appearing in the reproduced image. , Which represents the entire signal transformation function. The signal level (S) is shown on a logarithmic scale. The maximum level value of the electric signal is represented by Smax and the minimum level value is represented by Smin. The maximum density of 1.5 to 2.8, preferably 1.8 to 2.6 is Dmax, and the fog density to fog density +0.3. Desirably, the minimum density value from fog density to fog density + 0.2 is Dmin
Express with. According to the method of the present invention, Smax is associated with Dmax and Smin is associated with Dmin as shown by a curve A in FIG. 1, and one of them is logarithmically converted so that the logarithmic value of the signal level is proportional to the concentration. The basic feature is that the linear conversion after the above is performed.

In practice, especially for medical X-rays, the broken line B
As indicated by 1 and B2, it is desirable to reduce the overall density by ΔD around a predetermined level value Sa between Smax and Smin. The reduction width ΔD shows the maximum reduction width ΔDmax at the center of the predetermined level Sa, and the reduction width ΔD becomes smaller above and below the predetermined level Sa as the distance from the predetermined level Sa increases. Therefore, the contrast (gradient γ) of the image portion with the lower density is calculated as the polygonal line portion B1.
As described above, the contrast of the image portion having the higher density can be increased like the broken line portion B2 to improve the diagnostic performance. The reduction width is such that the maximum reduction width ΔDmax is from 0 to 0.5. The case where ΔDmax is 0 indicates the case of curve A, and the case where ΔDmax is positive indicates the case of curve B. This maximum reduction width ΔDmax is preferably 0.1 to
It is 0.45. Practically, it is not preferable that the curved line B is not the broken lines B1 and B2, but the curved line B is a smooth curve because density "skips" appear at the folds.

When the height p is smaller than 0.1, the signal level value Sa of the maximum reduction width is too close to the minimum level value Smin, and the gradient γ is too close to 0, so that the contrast is lost and diagnosis cannot be performed. It becomes impossible to diagnose because the magnitude of the concentration is reversed. If p is greater than 0.7,
This level value Sa becomes too close to the maximum level value Smax, the gradient γ decreases in most signal regions, and Dmax
Is close to the gradation when simply lowered, and the effect due to the characteristics of this radiographic system is reduced. The average light emission amount () and the maximum frequency light emission amount (S
You may also choose p). Or the simple average of Smax and Smin You may choose.

In the gradation processing of the present invention, the gradient γ of the curve in the graph of FIG. 1 must always be positive, and the rate of change of the gradient Must always be positive or zero. The former condition is a condition that the contrast is not reversed, and the latter condition is a condition that the reproduced image finally obtained is easy to see, especially in the case of medical X-ray photography, in order to improve the diagnostic performance. That is, when the rate of change is 0, only the curve A is shown, but when the rate of change is positive, it means that the higher the density as in the curve B, the higher the contrast becomes. In the case of a photograph, it improves the diagnostic performance. It goes without saying that the rate of change may be partially positive and partially zero.

Greater than the maximum and minimum level values Smax and Smin,
Alternatively, for a small signal (corresponding to the above-mentioned non-subject image portion), it is preferable to convert it into a curved line that is smoothly connected to the curve between the extreme values. When making it larger or smaller than Dmax and Dmin, Since it is usually impossible to extend this value between the extreme values of the density due to the characteristics of the recording material, the broken line C shown in FIG.
It is preferable to convert into a form such as D that is smoothly saturated outside Dmax and Dmin.

The effect of the method of the present invention is expressed as "viewability" of a reproduced image, which cannot be expressed by measurable factors such as sharpness, graininess and contrast which are problems in ordinary photographic technology. And is expressed only as a subjective evaluation of the person who uses the photograph. Therefore, in order to express this as a statistical objective numerical value, a large number of radiographs of many cases, both of which were subjected to the gradation processing of the present invention and those which were not subjected, were prepared. Observations and evaluations were requested from a human radiological reading expert (radiologist), and the subjective evaluation was statistically processed to evaluate the diagnostic performance. In the above embodiment, the recording unit 4 records the data simultaneously with the reading by the reading unit 3. However, it is also possible to temporarily store the read signal on a tape or the like and input it to the recording unit 4 at the time of recording. . Further, the recording system in the recording unit 4 does not have to be a direct recording system using a laser light source,
For example, it is possible to display the final signal obtained by the reading unit 3 on the CRT and take a picture of the image on the CRT. Of course, various known recording methods such as recording with a heat ray using a heat sensitive material can be adopted instead of recording with a laser beam using a photosensitive material.

Further, in the above-described embodiment, the gain setting or γ setting of the photomultiplier tube 32 may be a system of switching channels having different gains or γ. At this time, Vma
When the values of x and Vmin are analog, the channel is switched by an analog switch, and when the value is digital, the channel is switched by a digital switch. Further, the gain setting is such that the gain of the photomultiplier tube 32 is directly changed by changing the voltage of the high voltage power source of the photomultiplier tube 32, but instead of this, an amplifier 33 that amplifies the output of the photomultiplier tube 32 is used. The gain of may be changed. However, in this case, since the noise of the amplifier 33 is also amplified with a high gain, the former method of changing the gain of the multiplier 32 is preferable for the gain setting.
