Electrical contacts, which are widely used for switches for electric power, automatic control, information transmission, etc., are a few moving parts in an electric circuit, and high precision and high reliability of their electrical characteristics are strongly demanded. That is, it is said that most of the failures of electric devices occur in this portion, and the quality of the contact material determines the life of the device.

In general, the electrical properties of contact materials are greatly affected by their surface condition. For example, a contact such as a relay is often used in which gold plating or a gold clad layer is provided on the surface of a silver alloy to reduce the contact resistance. But,
In a manufacturing method such as plating or clad (lamination rolling), minute pinholes are generated on the surface, and the generation of these is unavoidable. In a contact having such a surface defect, in an atmosphere containing a corrosive gas such as a chlorine-based gas or a sulfur-based gas, a corrosion reaction with silver in the lower layer proceeds through a pinhole, and silver chloride or silver sulfide on the surface. And the like, which causes an increase in contact resistance and eventually poor conduction. If such a contact is used, the reliability of the device is impaired and its life is shortened.

そのため、接点部分の改善を求める要求は、依然として

Therefore, there is still a strong demand for improvement of the contact portion.

On the other hand, when the surface condition of the contact is microscopically observed, there are minute irregularities. Therefore, the contact degree of the contact in the contact condition is about 1/1000 of the apparent surface of the contact. In this case, the electrical characteristics of the contact material cannot be fully exhibited, and there is a problem in that it is insufficient in terms of high accuracy and high reliability. However, it is also difficult to make the surface completely smooth.

On the other hand, silver alloy materials are often used for high-current type contacts used in magnetic switches, etc. There is a case where a part of the material begins to melt. FIG. 1 schematically shows an apparatus for ionizing and implanting a predetermined element on the surface of a contact material. The ion implantation contact material 7 is placed in the sample chamber 6, and the inside of the ion implantation apparatus main body 1 is evacuated from the exhaust port 8 by a vacuum pump. When the specified vacuum (10 -5 Torr or less) is reached, the gas inlet 9
A certain amount of inert gas such as nitrogen or argon is flown in, the ion generating power source 3 is turned on, and ions are generated in the ion generating unit 2. In the case of a solid element, for example, a noble metal element such as metal or silver, or a refractory metal element such as tungsten or molybdenum, for example, metal particles or compounds of these elements are inserted into the evaporation chamber 10 and the heater (resistance heater) 11
The metal is evaporated while being heated by, for example, and the ion generating power source 3 is turned on to generate ions in the ion generating unit 2. Next, the ion acceleration power supply 4 is turned on, and the accelerator 5
Thereby accelerating the ions and injecting them into the contact material 7. An accelerating voltage of 50 to 500 keV is often used, but generally, when the accelerating voltage is increased, the ion implantation depth is deepened, and therefore it can be appropriately selected according to the purpose. In this case, of the ions accelerated by the accelerator 5,
It is desirable to select only predetermined ions and implant high-purity ions into the contact material by placing a mass separator in the middle, but when it is expected that the purity of the target implanted ions will be higher than originally This is not the case when using a high-purity substance (such as when using a high-purity substance).

(First Invention) FIG. 2 (a) shows a contact material before ion implantation, and FIG. 2 (b) shows a contact material after ion implantation. As shown in FIGS. 2A and 2B, the base material 13 of the contact material on the base material 12 is a silver alloy, and gold plating (or gold clad) 14 is formed on the base material 13 in order to improve the electrical characteristics. Has been applied. However, inevitable pinhole-like microscopic defects 15 are present in the gold plating layer 14. When ions are implanted into such a contact, an ion-implanted layer 14 'is formed and the minute defects 15 on the surface of the contact material disappear. As shown in the figure, there may be a case where only a part of the surface of the gold plating layer 14 is ion-implanted, and although not shown, ion implantation may be carried out over the entire gold plating layer 14 and the microscopic defects inside may also disappear.

FIGS. 3 (a) and 3 (b) show the concept of changes in the gold plating layer (or gold cladding layer) 14 before and after ion implantation.
FIG. 6C shows a distribution curve of implanted ions inside the gold plating layer 14. Before the implantation (a), it has a crystal structure in which gold atoms 16 are regularly arranged, and contains minute defects 15 between them. When ions (for example, N ions, Ar ions, etc.) 17 are injected into this, collision with atoms occurs, and a large number of so-called Frenkel defects of interstitial atoms and vacancies occur. Of these, most of the vacancies recover and disappear at room temperature,
The interstitial atoms increase as the amount of implanted ions increases. As a result, a partial volume expansion occurs and the microdefects 15
Will disappear. About 1000 atoms (in this case, 16 gold atoms) in the metal layer can be moved with respect to one implanted ion, so that the arrangement of atoms in the metal layer is disturbed and amorphized, resulting in an ion-implanted layer on the surface. 14 'are formed, and the pinhole-shaped microscopic defects 15 disappear. The implanted ions 17 collide with the atoms 16 one after another, and eventually lose their energy and stop. Therefore, the distribution of the ions in the plating layer 14 'into which the ions are injected is the third
As shown in Figure (c), an approximately bell-shaped concentration curve is drawn. The maximum penetration depth l of the implanted ions is the atomic weight of the ions,
Although it depends on the crystal structure of the plating layer into which the ions are implanted, it is relatively easy to control because it is proportional to the magnitude of the acceleration voltage.

A contact material 7 having a structure as shown in FIG. 2 (a) is placed in the sample chamber 6 of the ion implantation apparatus 1 of FIG. 1, and after evacuation, nitrogen gas is introduced from the gas introduction port 9 to generate an ion generating power source. Nitrogen ions are generated in the ion generator 2 by turning on 3, and the ion acceleration power source 4 is turned on to accelerate the ions at 100 keV. After confirming the predetermined ion implantation amount on the monitor of the device body, the contact material is taken out. On the surface of this contact material,
No microscopic defects such as pinholes were found.

The maximum penetration depth l of the implanted nitrogen ions in the gold plating layer 14 'was about 0.1 μm. Therefore, even in an atmosphere containing a corrosive gas such as a chlorine-based gas or a sulfur-based gas, the corrosion resistance of the contact is improved and high reliability can be obtained. The altitude is from Hv70 before ion implantation to Hv250 after ion implantation.
As a result, the wear resistance is improved and the contact wear amount is reduced. When nitrogen gas ions are implanted, the ion-implanted layer becomes a hardened layer.

FIG. 4 (a) shows the contact material before ion implantation. In the figure, the base material 13 of the contact material on the base material 12 is a silver alloy, and a gold-plated or gold-clad layer 14 is provided on the base material 12 to improve the electrical characteristics. The state after ion implantation of the contact is as shown in FIG. 4 (b). Fourth
Both of the diagrams (a) and (b) schematically show the contact state of the contact material. The contact material may not include gold plating, a gold clad layer, or the like. Microscopically, the surface of the gold clad layer 14 has minute irregularities, and both contacts substantially share only a few contact points. In the figure, pinhole-like microdefects that are thought to exist in the gold clad layer are omitted.

Argon ions are implanted into the contact material of FIG. 4 (a) by the same method as in the previous example except that the ion implantation apparatus of FIG. 1 is used and argon gas is introduced from the gas introduction port 9. In the ion-implanted layer 14 ', the disorder of atomic arrangement progresses,
Amorphized. In this example, the amorphous layer is richer in elasticity than the crystalline layer. Therefore, when both contact points are brought into contact with each other and pressed, their surfaces are easily elastically deformed as shown in FIG. The contact area) increases dramatically. The contact area of both contacts before ion implantation was about 1/1000 of the apparent area, but increased to 1/2 to 1/3 of the apparent area after ion implantation.

The implantation method is the same as that of the first invention, but in the ion implantation apparatus of FIG. 1, generation of gold ions is performed, for example, by inserting a small amount of gold particles into the evaporation chamber 10 and heating them. This is performed by generating gold vapor and ionizing it in the ion generator 2. Further, silver ions are generated, for example, by generating silver chloride vapor as in the generation of gold ions.

(Third invention) FIG. 6 shows that the base material 13 of the contact material is a silver alloy.
The state is shown when the so-called refractory metal tungsten and / or molybdenum is ionized and implanted.
The implantation method is the same as that of the first invention, but in the ion implantation apparatus of FIG. 1, tungsten ions are generated by, for example, a small amount of tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) etc. in the evaporation chamber 10.
After heating and heating it, only the tungsten ions are injected into the contact material using a mass separator. Further, the implantation of molybdenum ions can be similarly performed using a compound containing molybdenum. Of course, each of tungsten and molybdenum may be used alone.

Since the first aspect of the present invention is as seen above, according to this, even if there is a minute pinhole-like defect on the surface of the contact material, the defect is repaired by the implanted ions. For this reason,
Corrosion resistance of the contact material is improved and high reliability is obtained. Also, when argon ions are implanted, the surface atoms are made amorphous by the interaction with the implanted ions, and the surface layer becomes a layer rich in elasticity, and it is easy to smooth by pressing,
The contact resistance on the contact surface can be remarkably reduced even when the contact surface area is reduced due to the minute irregularities present on the surface.
