Usually, in the case of producing a hydroxycarboxylic acid, for example, in the case of a hydroxycarboxylic acid such as lactic acid or glycolic acid, it is dehydrated and dimerized to obtain a cyclic dimer, and then in the presence of various catalysts. It is known that a high molecular weight polymer can be obtained by ring-opening melt polymerization. This method
The production of the cyclic dimer lactide or glycolide requires a great deal of labor and cost and is not economical. Further, some hydroxycarboxylic acids do not form a cyclic dimer, and in this case, this method cannot be used.

The direct polycondensation reaction of a hydroxycarboxylic acid such as lactic acid or glycolic acid is a sequential reaction similar to the esterification reaction between a dibasic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, and the molecular weight increases with the reaction time. However, this reaction is a reversible reaction, and the presence of water as a by-product in the reaction system causes a decrease in the molecular weight of the polycondensate due to the hydrolysis action. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the generated water to the outside of the system in order to obtain high molecular weight polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, or the like.
As a means of removing water from the reaction mixture, a method of distilling a solvent and entraining or azeotropically distilling water is adopted, and the amount of distillate of the solvent is increased as much as possible to produce more water. It can be removed to the outside of the system more quickly.

By the way, the polycondensation reaction has hitherto been carried out using a tank reactor equipped with a stirring blade. In order to distill off the solvent, it is necessary to supply heat to the inside of the reactor, but as a general method, external heating using a reactor jacket or a coil can be mentioned. However, as the polycondensation reaction nears completion, the viscosity of the reaction mixture becomes extremely high, resulting in poor thermal conductivity, the distillate amount of the solvent is significantly reduced, and low-boiling substances such as by-product water are reduced. There is a problem that it becomes difficult to remove it efficiently from the reaction mixture.

As a countermeasure, there are a mechanical method of increasing the stirring speed, a method of increasing the temperature of external heating, a method of carrying out the reaction under reduced pressure or while blowing an inert gas, and the like. However, there is a problem in that the stirring speed is limited, and if the temperature of the external heating of the reactor is raised too much, thermal degradation of the polymer and catalyst will occur. Further, in the case of blowing an inert gas, the contact efficiency between the inert gas and the reaction product is low, and in the tank reactor, the reaction product accompanying the scale-up even when the degree of pressure reduction is increased. However, there is a problem that the expected solvent distilling effect cannot be obtained due to the increase of the liquid depth.

In the method of the present invention, the addition of the polymerization catalyst can be arbitrarily selected depending on the degree of polymerization (intrinsic viscosity, molecular weight) of the desired polymer.
When producing low molecular weight polymers (intrinsic viscosities of about 0.
If less than 3), the target polymer can be easily obtained with or without addition of a catalyst. On the other hand, when producing a polymer having a high molecular weight (intrinsic viscosity of about 0.3 or more),
It is preferable to use a catalyst because of the reaction time (reaction rate).

Heating of the tank reactor and the thin film distillation apparatus is
Use heat medium for outer jacket. The reaction temperature varies depending on whether or not an organic solvent is used, the boiling point of the organic solvent when it is used, and the thermal stability of the produced polymer, but is preferably 50 to 250 ° C, more preferably 100 to 250 ° C. It is 200 ° C. If it is less than 50 ° C, the reaction rate is slow and it is not economical. Further, if the temperature exceeds 250 ° C., the polymer may be deteriorated or the quality of the obtained product may be deteriorated, which is not preferable.

In the figure, reference numeral 1 is a tank reactor equipped with a vertical rotary shaft, a stirring blade attached to this rotary shaft, and a heating jacket, and a raw material hydroxycarboxylic acid, a solvent, and a catalyst are charged and stirred. While doing the reaction. The reaction is
It consists of three steps: dehydration, oligomerization and polymerization.
First, in dehydration and oligomerization, most of the distillate is water, so it is cooled in the condenser 2 and removed outside the system. In the next polymerization, the solvent is distilled off, cooled in the condenser 2 and collected in the storage tank 4. Simultaneously with the polymerization reaction, the reaction mixture is continuously supplied to the thin film distillation apparatus 3 by the liquid feed pump 6 to distill off the solvent, cool it by the condenser 2 and collect it in the storage tank 4. The concentrate is returned to reactor 1. Since the recovered solvent contains water, it is returned to the reactor 1 after removing water through a desiccant. Further, instead of using a desiccant, water may be removed by distillation and returned to the reactor 1. In the reactor shown in the figure, the distilled solvent passes through the column 5 filled with the desiccant and returns to the reactor 1. If the desiccant cannot be packed in the column 5, the distillate solvent is refluxed and dehydrated in another reactor in the presence of the desiccant to distill a part of the solvent to carry out a polycondensation reaction. It can be carried out by a method such as returning to.

As described above, when the polycondensation reaction is carried out in the tank reactor, the thin film distillation apparatus is used to increase the evaporation surface area per unit amount of the reaction mixture.
Since the amount of solvent distilled increases and the water produced by polycondensation can be efficiently removed, polycondensation of polyhydroxycarboxylic acid can be carried out in a short time.
