【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】本発明は、リモートコントロール
ユニット（ＲＣＵ）に関し、さらに詳しくはインタラク
ティブテレビ（ＩＴＶ）環境で使用されるＲＣＵに関す
る。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】人々は各家庭で様々なテレビ（ＴＶ）番
組を見ている。ケーブルテレビ（ＣＡＴＶ）の導入によ
り、さらに多くのテレビ番組を見ることができるように
なった。さて、次世代のテレビ、インタラクティブテレ
ビ（ＩＴＶ）がまもなく登場する。ＩＴＶもまた文字通
り何百ものテレビ番組を提供し、視聴者に選択させるこ
とになるであろう。
【０００３】テレビ番組によっては家族全員が見るのに
ふさわしくないものもあるだろう。例えば、「Ｒ」指定
映画はおとなによっては楽しむ人もいるが、ある年齢以
下の子供が見るのには不適当であると言えよう。
【０００４】
【発明が解決しようとする課題】テレビ番組へのアクセ
スをうまく制限しようとした試みはこれまでにも数多く
ある。一例をあげると、ユーザーに例えばリモートコン
トロールユニットなどを通じて、「アクセスコード」の
入力をさせるシステムがある。しかし、このアクセスコ
ードを忘れてしまえば問題である。間違いなくある種の
番組へのアクセスを制限することのできるＲＣＵが求め
られている。

【課題を解決しようとする手段】我々はある種の番組へ
のアクセスを制限するために使用するＲＣＵを発明し
た。具体的に言えば、このＲＣＵは入力パッド、コント
ローラー、リードオンリーメモリー（ＲＯＭ）および伝
送システムからなっている。このＲＯＭにはＲＣＵを識
別する第一のビットコードとＲＣＵ機能に対応する一連
のビットコードとが含まれている。この一連のビットコ
ードにおける各ビットコードは入力パッド上の一つまた
はそれ以上の入力キーを代表している。この入力パッド
上の一続きの入力キーを押すたびに、前記の第一のビッ
トコードが前記の一連のビットコードの中の一つのビッ
トコードと共にこの伝送システムを経由して送信され
る。この第一のビットコードによって前記のＲＣＵがあ
る種の番組へのアクセスを許可されたものであるかの識
別がなされる。

【実施例】本発明についてＩＴＶ環境の下での解説をお
こなう。本発明の基礎的な理解は、以下の特許明細書を
参照されたい。「インタラクティブ・テレビジョン・コ
ンバーター」と題する米国特許出願第０７／９６５、４
９２号（出願日：１９９２年１０月２３日、出願人：Ａ
Ｔ＆Ｔ）、米国特許出願第０８／０２９２０９号「重な
り合う透明性を持つウインドウのコーディング並びにデ
ィスプレーの方法および装置」（出願日：１９９３年３
月１０日）米国特許出願第０７／９６５４９３号「イン
タラクティブ・テレビジョン・マルチキャスティング」
（出願日：１９９２年１０月２３日）、米国特許出願第
０７／９６５４６３号「シグナル・ディストリビューシ
ョン・システムにおけるターミナルの初期化」（出願
日：１９９２年１０月２３日）、米国特許出願第０７／
９９７９８５号「インタラクティブ・テレビジョン・シ
ステムのためのプログラム・サーバー」（出願日：１９
９２年１２月２８日）、米国特許出願第０８／０５６９
７３号「インテグレイテッド・テレビジョン・サービス

【０００７】図１について、このＲＣＵ１００は入力パ
ッド１０２、コントローラー１０４、リードオンリーメ
モリー（ＲＯＭ）１０６、および送信システム１０８か
らなっている。これらの素子はすべて図示されているよ
うに相互接続されている。
【０００８】さらにこの図１において、前記の入力パッ
ド１０２は複数の入力キーからなっている。各入力キ
ー、例えば１１０（あるいは一続きの入力キー）は前記
のＲＯＭ１０６中のビットストリームと結び付いてい
る。
【０００９】さらにこの図１において、前記のＲＯＭ１
０６は前記の特定のＲＣＵ１００を識別するビットスト
リームを含む。このＲＯＭ１０６はまた前記の入力パッ
ド１０２上の各入力キーと結び付いているビットストリ
ームを含んでいる。このＲＯＭ１０６は好ましくは二つ
のＲＯＭからなり、一つが前記のＲＣＵ１００と結び付
き（例えばＲＯＭ１）、もう一つが前記のエントリーパ
ッド１０２と結び付いている（例えばＲＯＭ２）。
【００１０】さらにこの図１において、前記のコントロ
ーラー１０４は入力キーが押されたという信号を受け取
る。このコントローラー１０４は第一のＲＯＭ（前記の
ＲＣＵ１００を識別する）中の前記の第一のビットスト
リームと、この押された入力キーと結び付いた第二のＲ
ＯＭ中の前記の一連のビットストリーム中の一つのビッ
トストリームを探す。このコントローラー１０４はつい
でこれらのビットストリームを送信システムへと伝達す
る。
【００１１】再び図１において、前記の送信システム１
０８は好ましくは赤外送信機である。この送信システム
１０８はＩＴＶ環境のもとで、ビットストリームを例え
ばセット・トップ・ボックスへと送信する。このセット
・トップ・ボックスは使用されているＲＣＵのタイプを
示す第一のビットストリームに基づき、番組が許可でき
るものである時にのみこの番組の視聴を許可する。言い
換えれば、幾つかのＲＣＵ（あらかじめ決定された第一
のビットストリームを持つ）だけがある種の番組にアク
セスを許可される。このようにすると子供用のリモート
コントロールユニットを使用する場合、ある種の番組に
だけアクセスが許可されるようになる。
【００１３】本発明について、ここまでＩＴＶ環境に関
連して記載してきたが、当業者は本発明がケーブルテレ
ビ環境を始めとするその他の状況でも使用できることに
気がつかれるであろう。
【００１４】さらに当業者は、様々な実施例の中で、本
発明を実行するためのインテリジェンスがケーブル会社
のヘッドエンド中に、あるいはセット・トップ・ボック
スなどのように末端におかれてもよいことに気付かれる
であろう。さらに、このインテリジェンスは前記のＲＣ
Ｕ１００自身の中におかれてもよいのである。その場
合、このＲＣＵ１００は単にチャンネル６８、これは例
えばアダルトムービーのチャンネルであり、あるいは品
物の注文ができ、その料金をＩＴＶ口座に請求させるこ
とができるようなチャンネルであるが、をつけるための
コマンドをテレビ受像機へと送ることができないように
プログラムすることもできるのである。

【発明の効果】ある種のテレビ番組へのアクセスを失敗
なく上手に制限することのできるリモートコントロール
ユニットを提供する。

  1. 【請求項１】 （ａ）複数の入力キーを持つ入力パッド
    と、（ｂ）前記の入力パッドに応答するコントローラー
    と、（ｃ）リモートコントロールユニットの型を識別す
    るビットストリームと、各ビットストリームが前記の複
    数の入力キーの内の少なくとも一つの入力キーのシーケ
    ンスに対応している複数のビットストリームとを記憶す
    るメモリー素子と、（ｄ）前記のコントローラーに応答
    するビットストリームを送信するための手段と、を有す
    ることを特徴とするリモートコントロールユニット。
