Description
Claims (22)
- 1.低い屈折率を有する少なくとも1つの光学的緩衝層の設けられたシリコン基 板上に配置されており光重合体から成る光導波体と、 突合わせ結合により該光導波体の結合端面ヘ結合されるべきグラスファイバを収 容するための、V字形の横断面を有する位置決め溝とが設けられておリ、該位置 決め溝は前記基板へ異方性にエッチングされ前記光導波体に対し実質的に整列さ れるように配向されている、 たとえぼ変調器、方向性結合器、スイッチ、偏光子、スプリッタ等のような光集 積回路素子において、前記位置決め溝(12)の、結合の行われる側の端部領域 にはプラスチック材(15)が充填されておリ、該プラスチック材(15)上の 光導波体(17)は、該光導波体(17)の軸線方向に対し垂直に延び結合端面 の平面内に位置する前記プラスチック材(15)の端面(18)まで延在してお り、該端面(18)は、前記位置決め溝(12)の斜めに延在する端部領域(1 3)の外側に配置されていることを特徴とする、光集積回路素子。
- 2.的記光導波体(17)を担持する緩衝層(14)と前記プラスチック材(1 5)とを端面(18)の平面まで覆う層(16)が設けられており、該層(16 )は露光により屈折率を変えることのできる光重合体から成リ、前記光導波体( 17)は該層(16)の相応の露光によりその一部分として形成されている、請 求項1記載の素子。
- 3.光導波体(17)として形成された前記層(16)の領域はいっそう高い屈 折率を有する、請求項2記載の素子。
- 4.前記位置決め溝(12)は、挿入されたグラスファイバ(11)のグラスフ ァイバコア(19)が前記光導波体(17)と整列されるような設計仕様を有す る、請求項1〜3のいずれか1項記載の素子。
- 5.位置決め溝(12)を充填するための前記プラスチック材(15)は光量合 体である、請求項2〜4のいずれか1項記載の素子。
- 6.前記プラスチック材(15)は、緩衝層(14)を覆う前記の層(16)の 光重合体と同じものである、請求項5記載の素子。
- 7.前記光導波体(17)のグラスファイバ側の端部領域(17a)はグラスフ ァイバコア(19)の直径まで断熱的に拡開されている、請求項2〜6のいずれ か1項記載の素子。
- 8.横方向および/または垂直方向の拡開が行われている、請求項7記載の素子 。
- 9.前記光導波体(17)のグラスファイバ側の端部領域(17b)は先が尖っ ており、いっそう低い屈折率を有する別の光導波体(21)内で終端しており、 該別の光導波体はグラスファイバコア(19)まで延在している、請求項2〜6 のいずれか1項記載の素子。
- 10.前記別の光導波体(21)は、幅および/または深さにおいていっそう大 きい広がりを有しており、結合平面におけるグラスファイバコア(19)の設計 仕様に整合されている、請求項9記載の素子。
- 11.光導波体(17)の電磁場をグラスファイバ(11)の方へ整合させるた めに、前記光導波体(17)を囲む光重合体の層(16)の領域は、前記光導波 体(17)とこれを囲む領域との間の屈折率の差がグラスファイバの方へ向かう につれて減少するような屈折率経過特性を有する、請求項2〜10のいずれか1 項記載の素子。
- 12.低い屈折率の少なくとも1つの光学的緩衝層の設けられたシリコン基板上 に配置され光重合体から成る光導波体を有しており、該光導波体に結合されるべ きグラスファイバを収容するために、長く砥びたマスク貫通開口部を有する露光 マスクを用いることにより、V字型の横断面を有し前記光導波体と実質的に整列 される位置決め溝が前記シリコン基板に異方性にエッチングされる、 変調器、方向性結合器、スイッチ、偏光子、スプリッタ等のようなたとえば請求 項1〜10のいずれか1項記載の光集積回路素子の製造方法において、a)光学 的緩衝層(14)が被着され、b)該緩衝層の上に光重合体から成る層(16) が被着され、この被着前にまたはこれと同時に位置決め溝(12)にプラスチッ ク材(15)が充填され、 c)前記の層(16)の相応の局部的な露光または加熱による極性づにより光導 波体(17)が形成され、 d)前記位置決め溝(12)は、光導波体(17)の軸線方向に対し垂直に延在 し結合平面を成す平面(18)まで内部が取り除かれることを特徴とする、 光集積回路素子の製造方法。
- 13.前記の層(16)の被着ならびに前記位置決め溝(12)の充填は、同一 の光重合体を用いた1つの作業ステップで行われる、請求項12記載の方法。
- 14.露光マスクが前記の重合体の層(16)の上に載置され、光重合により、 光導波体(17)として用いるべき領域における屈折率の増加が行われる、請求 項12または13記載の方法。
- 15.露光マスクが前記の重合体の層(16)の上に載置され、紫外線光褪色プ ロセスにより、光導液体(17)を画定する領域の屈折率低減が行われる、請求 項12または13記載の方法。
- 16.グラスファイバ(11)と光導波体(17)との間の電磁場の整合を最適 化するために、グラスファイバコア(19)の手前で前記光導波体(17)の断 熱的拡開が行われる、請求項14または15記載の方法。
- 17.グラスファイバコア(19)の直径まで横方向に拡開するために、マスク 開口部の拡開された露光マスクが用いられる、請求項16記載の方法。
- 18.グラスファイバ(19)の直径まで垂直方向に拡開するために、露光強度 および/または露光時間がグラスファイバの方へ向かってランプ特性的に増大さ れる、請求項16または17記載の方法。
- 19.第1の露光マスクを用いた第1の露光ステップで、グラスファイバ(11 )の方へ向かって先の尖った第1の光導波体(17)が形成され、第2の露光マ スクを用いた第2の露光ステップで、前記の第1の光導波体(17)を結合平面 と接続するいっそう低い屈折率の第2の光導波体(21)が形成され、前記の第 2の光導波体(21)の直径はグラスファイバコアに整合されている、請求項1 4または15記載の方法。
- 20.前記の層(16)をあとから露光するために、可変の透過性を有する露光 マスクが用いられ、該露光マスクは、ファイバ側ではいつそう高い透過性を有し 、光導波体側ではいつそう低い透過性を有する、請求項16〜19のいずれか1 項記載の方法。
- 21.レーザ(Laser−Ablalion)により前記位置決め溝の内部が 取り除かれる、請求項12〜20のいずれか1項記載の方法。
- 22.互いに並置された多数の接続部、位置決め溝(12)および光導波体(1 7)が同時に製造される、請求項12〜21のいずれか1項記載の方法。
