2. Description of the Related Art In recent years, a system for directly printing still images such as video images, television images, computer graphics and the like in full color has advanced, and the market thereof has expanded rapidly. Among them, a method in which a sublimable dye is used as a recording material, which is superposed on an image receiving sheet and heated by a thermal head according to a recording signal to transfer the dye onto the image receiving sheet to obtain a recorded image, is attracting attention. . This recording method is very vivid because the color material used is a dye, and also has excellent transparency, so the resulting image is excellent in reproducibility of intermediate colors and gradation, and can be used in conventional full-color offset printing or It is the same as the image by gravure printing, and it is possible to form a high quality image comparable to a photographic image.

Under the circumstances as described above, the thermal transfer image-receiving sheet used in the sublimation type thermal transfer system is particularly required to have high whiteness in terms of color reproducibility and vividness. In order to meet such demands, generally, the whiteness of the base material is increased (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 63-1595), or a resin such as a receiving layer or a primer which is less colored such as yellowing is used. It often corresponds. Also, go further,
Attempts have also been made to increase the whiteness by adding pigments, dyes and fluorescent whitening agents to the intermediate layer (JP-A-63-108338) and the receiving layer (JP-A-1-206095).

Generally, when viewed with the naked eye, a slightly bluish white color is recognized as a brighter white color. In addition, in a general thermal transfer image-receiving sheet prepared by coating a resin for a receiving layer on a white base material,
Since the surface of the receiving layer was slightly yellowish, there was no white part in the image and only an image lacking sharpness was obtained. This is due to the hue and whiteness of the material used as the base material, or the yellowness of the receiving layer resin, but because the resin of the receiving layer is required to have various functions, a colorless and highly transparent material should be used. Difficult to choose.

Further, even in the method of increasing the whiteness of the base material, not only the receiving layer but also the intermediate layer needs to be colorless and transparent, which narrows the range of material selection and is a preferable method. I can't say. For the reasons described above, the method of increasing the whiteness by dispersing a white pigment in the resin of the receiving layer, which is the outermost surface of the thermal transfer image-receiving sheet, is the most simple and effective in terms of whiteness. However, when a white pigment is dispersed in the receiving layer, the image receiving sensitivity and the density are lowered, and the essential performance as an image receiving paper is impaired, which is also difficult. Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a thermal transfer image-receiving sheet which has a high whiteness and can obtain an image excellent in color reproducibility and sharpness even when used in a sublimation type thermal transfer sheet.

In the present invention, as a result of intensive studies to solve the above problems, a white pigment is dispersed in a coating solution for an intermediate layer between a base material and a receiving layer of a thermal transfer image-receiving sheet. Then, the method of coating and laminating the receiving layer thereon was found to be the method of obtaining the best results as a whole, and the present invention has been completed. In the case of this method, since the resin layer of the receiving layer is present on the outermost surface of the image receiving sheet, the effect of the white pigment added to the intermediate layer is not maximized, and the base material is slightly colored. In some cases, sufficient whiteness may not be obtained due to the influence of the underlayer if it does not have sufficient hiding power. Therefore, as a result of evaluating various white pigments, the best performance was obtained in terms of whiteness and hiding power when using a white pigment made of titanium oxide having an anatase type crystal structure as a raw material.

In the present invention, as the material that can be used for the substrate, for papers, condenser paper, glassine paper, sulfuric acid paper, and other papers having a relatively high size are suitable. Further, synthetic paper and various plastic films can also be used. Among the plastic films, polyester films, rigid polyvinyl chloride films, polyolefin resin films such as polypropylene, etc. are versatile in terms of performance and price. These may be used alone, but may also be used in a laminated body combined with other materials. The thickness is preferably 100 μm to 300 μm.

The intermediate layer used in the present invention, which is also a feature of the present invention, has excellent adhesiveness to a substrate, whiteness, and hiding power, and a receiving layer coated on this intermediate layer. However, in many cases, since it is an organic solvent system, it must also have some solvent resistance. From this point, the binder for the intermediate layer can be selected mainly from the thermoplastic resins according to the type of the substrate. Among the white pigments, the most preferable pigment is anatase-type titanium oxide, which has particularly excellent whiteness and hiding power as described above. For the purpose of adjusting other performances and costs, it is free to mix white pigments other than the anatase type titanium oxide. Further, if necessary, additives such as a fluorescent whitening agent can be added.

Next, there is a receiving layer, which functions to receive the coloring agent transferred from the heat transfer sheet by heating, and particularly when the coloring material is a sublimable dye, this is received. However, it is desirable that the dye once received does not re-sublimate at the same time as the color is developed. Specifically, the following is used.

Since the receiving layer is heated and pressed by a thermal head or the like together with the thermal transfer sheet at the time of transfer, it easily sticks to the surface of the thermal transfer sheet, and usually the resin having a dye permeability is separated from the above-mentioned resin. It is formed by containing a mold agent. As such a release agent, solid waxes, fluorine-based or phosphoric acid ester-based surfactants, silicone oils and the like are used. In particular, as the silicone oils, oily ones can be used, but reaction-curable ones are preferable. For example, a combination of amino-modified silicone and epoxy-modified silicone is often used.

In the case of a solid wax, the amount of these releasing agents added is 5 to 50% by weight, preferably 10 to 20% by weight, based on the weight of the resin. In the case of agents, 0.5 to 10 of resin weight
% By weight. Further, in the case of curable silicone oils, since they are not sticky, they can be used in a large amount and can be added in the range of 0.5 to 30% by weight of the resin weight. In either case, if the amount is too small, the releasing effect becomes insufficient, and if the amount is too large, the acceptability of the dye is lowered and a sufficient recording density cannot be obtained.

Further, as a method for imparting a releasing property to the receiving layer, in addition to the method of incorporating the releasing agent into the receiving layer as described above, a releasing layer may be separately laminated on the receiving layer. Then, either method may be adopted. Further, the receiving layer may optionally contain an inorganic filler such as finely divided silica.

In the thermal transfer image-receiving sheet of the present invention, an intermediate layer in which anatase type titanium oxide is dispersed is provided between the base material and the receiving layer. Therefore, the intermediate layer has excellent whiteness and hiding power, and even if the substrate is slightly colored, the image receiving surface has high whiteness, and color reproducibility is obtained even when a sublimation type thermal transfer sheet is used. Good and the image becomes clear.

(Tests and Results) The thermal transfer sheet prepared as described above was combined with each of the thermal transfer image-receiving sheets of Examples 1 and 2 and Comparative Examples 1 to 4, and an image was recorded by a thermal printer to obtain color reproducibility. And the sharpness were evaluated. Further, the whiteness of each of the thermal transfer image-receiving sheets of Examples 1 and 2 and Comparative Examples 1 to 4 was measured with a CR-221 color difference meter (manufactured by Minolta Co., Ltd.) to measure L.
*, A *, and b * values were calculated. The results are also shown in Table 1.

The thermal transfer image-receiving sheet of the present invention has a structure in which an intermediate layer containing anatase-type titanium oxide dispersed and contained is provided between the substrate and the receiving layer. By adopting such a configuration, the intermediate layer has excellent whiteness and hiding power, so that it is less affected by the color of the base material, and color reproduction is possible even in image formation using a sublimation type thermal transfer sheet. The heat transfer image-receiving sheet having good properties and capable of obtaining a clear image can be easily provided.
