(57) [Abstract] [Purpose] To improve the sensitivity of a contact sensor using an optical fiber as a sensor element. [Construction] A constriction A is formed in an optical fiber 1 used as a sensor element in the present contact sensor. By forming the constriction A having a smaller cross-sectional area than the other portions in this manner, the optical fiber 1 is likely to bend when it comes into contact with an object to be detected. Therefore, it can be used as a sensor element with higher sensitivity. The contact sensor detects the presence or absence of an object by detecting a change in the light intensity due to the loss of light due to the deformation of the optical fiber 1 by the signal processing device 6.

Description of the Related Art The type of sensor for detecting the presence or absence of an object and the detection method thereof differ depending on the size of the object to be detected. For example, an optical fiber is used as a sensor element for a contact-type sensor used when confirming the presence or absence of a work (machine part, etc.) in an automatic assembly machine, and the presence or absence of an object is determined by the contact between the object and the optical fiber. What is detected is known. This utilizes the characteristic that when the optical fiber is deformed, a loss occurs in the light transmitted through the optical fiber. More specifically, the change in the intensity of light transmitted through the optical fiber due to the deformation of the optical fiber is detected by a photodetector to detect the contact of the object with the optical fiber, that is, the presence or absence of the object.

The contact type sensor as described above, which uses such an optical fiber as a sensor element, can be realized in a small size and a light weight, and can be used without malfunction even in measurement under a special environment such as ocean measurement. There is an advantage that you can. In addition, since the optical fiber used as the sensor element is extremely flexible, the contact type sensor as described above,
There is also an advantage that an object to be detected is less likely to be destroyed during use.

Must be given to. Therefore, in the above contact type sensor, when the object to be detected cannot sufficiently deform the optical fiber, for example, when the object to be detected is a relatively small and lightweight object, There is a high possibility that the presence or absence of an object cannot be detected.

Since the cross-sectional area of the constricted portion A is smaller than that of the other portion, when the optical fiber 1 comes into contact with an object to be detected, the constricted portion A is subjected to a bending stress larger than that of the other portion and is bent. Prone to That is, the optical fiber 1 in which the constricted portion A is formed has a smaller radius of curvature when coming into contact with an object than the optical fiber having a uniform cross-sectional area, and the loss of light is remarkable. . That is, if the constricted portion A, which is a portion where the optical fiber is easily bent, is formed over an appropriate length, it can be used as a sensor element with higher sensitivity. Therefore, the sensitivity of the contact sensor can be improved without providing any special means for amplifying the output signal of the photodetector 4. As a method of forming the constricted portion A, for example, there are a method of grinding and a method of locally heating the optical fiber 1 and then applying appropriate tension to the optical fiber 1 to deform it. The diameter of the constricted portion A depends on the strength of the optical fiber, the application of the contact type sensor, etc., but is used for the applications shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 (described later). In that case, it is desirable that the diameter is about 80% of the diameter of the optical fiber 1. However, it is desirable that the constricted portion A is such that the bending moment generated in the cross section of the optical fiber 1 is maximized when the optical fiber 1 contacts an object. It is necessary to form a constriction at an appropriate position in consideration of which direction to contact the object. Further, if necessary, a constricted portion may be formed at a plurality of locations.

It is necessary to mount the present contact type sensor on the transport vehicle 7 so that it can be properly projected from the tip of the. In this way, when the obstacle B 1 exists in the traveling direction of the transport vehicle 7, the tip of the optical fiber 1 comes into contact with the obstacle B 1 as shown in FIG. 2B. In particular, since a bend with a small radius of curvature occurs in the narrowed portion A, even if the obstacle B 1 is lightweight,
This can be detected with high sensitivity. However, when used for such an application, it is necessary to appropriately determine the length and the like of the optical fiber 1 so that the optical fiber 1 has such strength that it is not deformed by its own weight.

This contact type sensor is installed at a predetermined position so that the tip of the optical fiber 1 contacts the objects B 2 and B 3 conveyed by the belt conveyor 8. Then, when the objects B 2 and B 3 conveyed by the belt conveyor 8 come into contact with the tip of the optical fiber 1 when passing through a predetermined position, the optical fiber 1
In particular, since a bend having a small radius of curvature occurs in the narrowed portion A, these can be detected with high sensitivity. Moreover, even if a relatively large object B 2 passes, the optical fiber 1
Since it is sufficiently deformed and is not destroyed or moved, the contact sensor can detect passage of an object with high sensitivity regardless of size or shape.
