In the reaction from tetraalkylbenzene to pyromellitic dianhydride, due to the property of oxidizing four alkyl groups, a complicated and multistep reaction system route is used due to the reaction in the conventional production of phthalic acid from orthoxylene. It can be inferred that it will go through. Further, as pyromellitic dianhydride precursors which are intermediate oxides thereof, aldehydes and the presence of dimethylphthalic acid in which two alkyl groups out of four alkyl groups are oxidized are also shown. Despite these facts, in the conventional production of pyromellitic dianhydride by catalytic vapor phase oxidation of tetraalkylbenzene, no production method based on the concept of using multiple catalysts according to each reaction step has been disclosed.

These conventional methods involve various problems because the multi-step reaction is carried out by almost one kind of catalyst, and the tetraalkylbenzene in the source gas composition has a low concentration. Or, the selectivity from tetraalkylbenzene to pyromellitic dianhydride is not sufficient, and even if these conditions are relatively satisfied, a purification process is necessary due to the coloring and lack of purity of the product, and it is not always industrial. I was not satisfied with it.

The range of / 8 to 1/2 is preferably used.

For the purpose of obtaining the decoloring effect, the layer length of the third catalyst is effective if it is ⅕ or more of the layer length of the first catalyst, but the yield improving effect is obtained. It is preferable to fill more, and the upper limit is substantially determined by the equipment and economic constraints. In addition, when the second catalyst is used at the same time, the effect of improving the yield does not significantly appear even if the amount of the second catalyst is large, so that the amount of 1/5 to 1/2 is sufficient.

Second catalyst (B) and first catalyst (A)
The filling amount of is influenced by the characteristics of the catalyst used and the characteristics of the reaction apparatus, so it is preferable to adjust it appropriately.
Usually, the second catalyst (B) is charged so that the space velocity with respect to this filling portion is 10,000 to 50,000 hr −1 , preferably 15,000 to 40,000 hr −1, and The filling amount of the first catalyst (A) is such that the space velocity with respect to this filling portion is 2,000 to 20,000 hr.

The loading of the second catalyst (B) is important,
When it is less than a certain minimum amount, the yield is rapidly lowered, and when it is more than the optimum amount, the yield is lowered. However, the effect is not particularly sensitive, and the fluctuation of the catalyst amount, which is an error caused at the time of filling, has almost no effect.
The minimum filling amount of the second catalyst (B) may be based on a sufficient amount so that the position showing the highest temperature on the temperature distribution of the catalyst layer is located at the portion filled with the second catalyst (B). it can.
The conversion rate of the raw material tetraalkylbenzene at the filling portion of the second catalyst (B) thus filled is 50% or more and less than 100%, and preferably 70% or more and less than 100%. When the filling amount of the first catalyst (A) is less than the above range, impurities in the product increase, which is not preferable. On the other hand, if the amount exceeds the above range, unnecessary catalyst is filled, which is not only wasteful but also increases ventilation resistance of the catalyst layer, which is not preferable.

A method of diluting the catalyst layer with a carrier or the like for the purpose of lowering the maximum temperature of the catalyst layer is also effectively used. First catalyst (A) and third catalyst (C)
The higher the conversion of tetraalkylbenzene in the third catalyst (C) is, the higher the effect of improving the yield of pyromellitic dianhydride is. Therefore, the third catalyst (C) usually has a space velocity of 500 to 50,000 h with respect to the filling site.
It is filled so as to be r −1 , preferably 1,000 to 30,000 hr −1 or less. If the amount of catalyst is less than this range, the conversion rate in the pre-catalyst is insufficient and its effect is insufficient, and if the amount of catalyst is more than this range, the catalyst filling amount becomes extremely large and Ventilation resistance increases,
It is economically disadvantageous.

The method shown in FIG. 3 is a form in which the second catalyst (B) shown in FIG. 1 is further filled with a small amount of a third catalyst (C) on the inlet side of the raw material mixed gas, and usually the third catalyst is used. (C)

The second catalyst (B) consumes the tetraalkylbenzene before it is supplied to the first catalyst (B), and the second catalyst (B) reduces the supply amount of tetraalkylbenzene to the first catalyst (A). It is not necessary to increase the conversion rate in (C), and the effect is exhibited with a smaller amount of filling than in the case of Fig. 2, and even if a large amount is filled, the effect is not so great, so the required minimum amount is used. Preferably.

The first catalyst (A) contains vanadium and molybdenum and / or tungsten as essential components, and the amount of molybdenum and tungsten used is in the range of 0.01 to 2, preferably in the atomic ratio to vanadium. Is selected in the range of 0.05 to 1. By containing molybdenum and / or tungsten in the above range, the selectivity from intermediate oxides such as dimethylphthalic acid and aldehydes to pyromellitic dianhydride becomes high, and the produced pyromellitic dianhydride is reoxidized. It is possible to keep the action extremely low.

Silver is preferably added as an optional constituent element of the first catalyst (A) in the present invention. The amount of silver added is 0.00 as the atomic ratio of silver to vanadium.
The range of 1 to 0.2 is preferable, but the range of 0.01 to 0.2 is more preferable. As the effect of silver, addition of an amount in the range improves the activity and the combustion gas content. There is a function of suppressing the generation, it is possible to improve the selectivity of pyromellitic dianhydride, but outside the above range,
The selectivity to pyromellitic dianhydride decreases, and when added in excess, conversely the generation of combustion gas increases.

Further, the first catalyst (A) in the present invention
As the optional constituent element of, at least one element selected from the group consisting of phosphorus, antimony, boron, chromium, cerium and sulfur is used. In particular, the addition of phosphorus and / or antimony is effective. The addition amount of the element is 0.002 as an atomic ratio with respect to vanadium.

The addition amount of the element may be in the range of 0.002 to 1 as an atomic ratio to vanadium, but 0.0
The range of 1 to 10 is preferable, and as the effect of adding phosphorus and / or antimony, the yield of pyromellitic dianhydride can be improved by adding an appropriate amount.
Outside the above range, the yield of pyromellitic dianhydride decreases.

The second catalyst (B) thus obtained
This action compensates for the disadvantage of the first catalyst (A), which has a low activity for tetraalkylbenzene and has a low selectivity especially at low temperatures, and is installed closer to the raw material gas inlet side than the first catalyst (A). As a result, the reaction at a low temperature and a high amount of tetraalkylbenzene is carried out in place of the first catalyst (A).

The compositional feature of the third catalyst (C) is that the content of alkali metal with respect to vanadium in the catalyst is higher than that of the alkali metal-added type catalyst that has been conventionally used for producing pyromellitic dianhydride. Therefore, the catalyst itself has extremely weak or almost no ability to produce pyromellitic dianhydride. That is, the third catalyst (C) which is the pre-stage catalyst in the present invention has vanadium and an alkali metal as essential constituent elements, and the atomic ratio of the alkali metal to vanadium is 0.2 to.
The range may be 2.5, but a range of 0.3 to 1.0 is preferable, and a range of 0.3 to 0.8 is more preferable. Above the above range, the catalytic activity is extremely low, so the effect of the pre-catalyst is insufficient, and below the above range, the production of combustion gas increases and the effect cannot be obtained, and in some cases the yield decreases conversely. To do.

Further, as the optional constituent element of the third catalyst (C) in the present invention, at least one or more elements selected from the group consisting of phosphorus and copper are further used, if necessary. The amount of these elements used is such that the sum of the atomic ratios of these elements to vanadium is more than 0 and 2 or less, preferably 0.2 to 1.5. Addition of these elements in appropriate amounts has the effect of improving the activity without significantly increasing the production of combustion gas.

On the other hand, as a further preferred embodiment of the third catalyst (C), an inorganic powder is added to the catalyst containing the above constituent elements for the purpose of dispersing the catalytically active substance. The inorganic powder is preferably an inert one, for example, a thermally stable inorganic powder containing silicon, specifically, crystalline silica, amorphous silica, silicon carbide, mullite,
Examples include natural minerals such as cordierite and diatomaceous earth, and particularly inexpensive natural minerals such as diatomaceous earth can be preferably used. By adding these inorganic powders, the activity of the catalyst can be appropriately increased and the effect of the pre-stage catalyst can be further increased without lowering the selectivity. The amount of these inorganic powders added varies depending on the particle size distribution, particle shape, specific surface area, etc., and it is difficult to specify uniformly, but it is necessary to cover the surface of the inorganic powder with all catalytically active components. Is desirable, and usually 5% by weight to 1000% by weight, particularly 10% by weight, based on the weight of oxide of the catalytically active component.
It is preferably used in the range of ~ 500% by weight. Also,
Inorganic powders such as titania, which have been used in conventional pyromellitic dianhydride catalysts, have the effect of increasing the activity of vanadium, which reduces the selectivity of the pre-catalyst. However, it is not preferable to add such a large amount.

The action of the third catalyst (C) as the pre-stage catalyst prepared as described above is to produce an intermediate oxide which becomes a pyromellitic dianhydride precursor while suppressing the production of combustion gas to be extremely low. However, when tetraalkylbenzene is passed through the first-stage catalyst alone, which is to supply the catalyst packed in the rear part, there is a conversion rate of several tens of percent, although pyromellitic dianhydride is hardly produced. Also,
When the pre-catalyst is installed on the inlet side of the raw material mixed gas of the first catalyst (A), the higher the conversion rate in the pre-catalyst part, the higher the pyromellitic dianhydride yield. It shows an action of forming an intermediate oxide which becomes a pyromellitic dianhydride precursor which is converted into pyromellitic dianhydride at a selectivity.

Example 18 In the laminated catalyst system using the catalysts B4 and A2 carried out in Example 11, the catalyst B4 was further installed at 100 mm on the reaction gas outlet side of this catalyst layer, and the same air volume as in Example 11 was obtained. The reaction was evaluated by the gas concentration and the reaction temperature.
As a result, the pyromellitic dianhydride yield was 63.5 mol%, which was a decrease of about 2 mol%. Next, instead of the catalyst B4, the catalyst A2 was set to 100 mm, and the reaction was evaluated in the same manner.

The decrease in these yields is considered to be due to the reoxidation of pyromellitic dianhydride, and it is considered that catalyst A2 has considerably lower reoxidation power for pyromellitic dianhydride than catalyst B4. In addition, when these catalysts are used in a single layer, it is considered that the effect of reoxidation is actually larger because the reaction is performed at a higher temperature than the above conditions in the vicinity of the hot spot. . From this, it can be seen that it is advantageous to fill the latter-stage catalyst containing molybdenum in the rear part of the catalyst layer through which the reaction gas containing a large amount of pyromellitic dianhydride passes.
