Claims (1)
- 【特許請求の範囲】 1.第1ヘッド(120)と、第2ヘッド(130)と、第1ヘッドを第2ヘッ ドに結合するための結合手段(110)とを備え、 上記第1ヘッド(120)は、読み取り用モジュール(82)と、書き込み用 モジュール(84)と、結合層(90)とを備えたテープ用薄膜式ヘッド・アセ ンブリであって、 上記読取り用モジュール(84)は、第1基層(102)と、複数の薄膜から なり上記基層上に形成された第1薄膜構成部であって少なくとも1つの読み取り 用エレメント(92)を備えた第1薄膜構成部(122)と、該第1薄膜構成部 を覆う第1絶縁層(112)とを備え、 上記書き込み用モジュール(84)は、第2基層(104)と、複数の薄膜か らなり上記基層上に形成された第2薄膜構成部であって少なくとも1つの書き込 み用エレメント(94)を備えた第2薄膜構成部(124)と、該第2薄膜構成 部を覆う第2絶縁層(114)とを備え、 上記結合層(90)は、読み取り用モジュールと書き込み用モジュールとの間 に備えられ、該両モジュールは、少なくとも1つの上記読み取り用エレメントが 夫々磁気テープの走行方向沿いに各読み取り用エレメントに対して整列するよう に、互いに固定された位置に保持され、第1ヘッドは、1方向において読み/書 き可能であり、 上記第2ヘッドは、上記第1ヘッドに対して逆向きになっていることを除いて 上記第1ヘッドと同一に構成され、第2ヘッドは、上記第1ヘッドと逆方向にお いて読み/書き可能である、両走行方向において読み/書き自在な両走行方向テ ープ用薄膜式ヘッド・アセンブリ(80)。 2.第1サブアセンブリ(220)と、第2サブアセンブリ(230)と、該両 第1,2サブアセンブリを相対的固定位置に保持するための保持手段(192) とを備えた両走行方向テープ用薄膜式ヘッド・アセンブリであって、 上記第1サブアセンブリ(220)は、第1基層(182)と、複数の薄膜か らなり該基層上に形成された第1薄膜構成部(184)と、該第1薄膜構成部を 覆う第1絶縁層(190)とを備え、上記薄膜構成部は、少なくとも1つの読み 取り用エレメント(186)と、少なくとも1つの書き込み用エレメント(18 8)とを備え、 上記第2サブアセンブリ(230)は、第2基層(202)と、複数の薄膜か らなり該基層上に形成された第2薄膜構成部(196)と、該薄膜構成部を覆う 第2絶縁層(194)とを備え、上記薄膜構成部は、少なくとも1つの書き込み 用エレメント(198)と、少なくとも1つの読み取り用エレメント(200) とを備え、 上記第1,2サブアセンブリ(220,230)は、第1サブアセンブリの少 なくとも1つの読み取り用エレメントが実質的に夫々該ヘッド・アセンブリ上を 走行する磁気テープの走行方向に沿って第2サブアセンブリの各書き込み用エレ メントに対して整列するように、かつ、第1サブアセンブリの少なくとも1つの 書き込み用エレメントのすべてが上記磁気テープの走行方向に沿って第2サブア センブリの各読み取り用エレメントに対して整列するように保持され、上記磁気 テープの両走行方向において読み/書き自在な両走行方向テープ用薄膜式ヘッド ・アセンブリ(180)。 3.上記保持手段は、上記サブアセンブリ間に備えられ2つの主面を有する耐摩 耗性ブロック(494)を備え、該主面の一方は、上記第1サブアセンブリに結 合され、該主面の他方は、上記第2サブアセンブリに結合された請求の範囲第2 項記載のテープ用ヘッド・アセンブリ。 4.第1サブアセンブリ(420)と、第2サブアセンブリ(430)と、該両 サブアセンブリを保持するための保持手段(392)とを備え、 上記第1サブアセンブリ(420)は、第1基層(382)と、該基層上に形 成され複数の薄膜からなる第1薄膜構成部(384)と、該薄膜構成部を覆う第 1絶縁層(390)とを備え、上記第1薄膜構成部は、少なくとも2つの読み取 り用エレメント(386)と、少なくとも1つの書き込み用エレメント(388 )とを備え、読み取り用エレメントの数は、書き込み用エレメントの数よりも少 なくとも1つ以上多く、 上記第2サブアセンブリ(430)は、第2基層(402)と、該基層上に形 成され複数の薄膜からなる第2薄膜構成部(396)と、該薄膜構成部を覆う第 2絶縁層(394)とを備え、上記第2薄膜構成部(396)は、少なくとも1 つの書き込み用エレメント(394)と、少なくとも2つの読み取り用エレメン ト(400)とを備え、読み取り用エレメントの数は、書き込み用エレメントの 数よりも少なくとも1つ以上多く、 上記保持手段(392)は、第1サブアセンブリの読み取り用エレメントの少 なくとも1つが磁気テープのヘッド・アセンブリを通過する走行方向(415) に沿って第2サブアセンブリの読み取り用エレメントの少なくとも1つに対して 整列するように、上記両サブアセンブリを相対的固定位置に保持し、第1サブア センブリの他の各読み取り用エレメントは、上記走行方向に沿って第2サブアセ ンブリの各書き込み用エレメントに対して整列し、第1サブアセンブリの各書き 込み用エレメントは、上記走行方向に沿って第2サブアセンブリの他の読み取り 用エレメントに対して整列する両走行方向テープ用薄膜式ヘッド・アセンブリで あって、 上記テープのサーボ・トラックに追随自在でありかつテープの両走行方向にお いて読み/書き自在の両走行方向テープ用薄膜式ヘッド・アセンブリ(380) 。 5.第1サブアセンブリ(520)と、第2サブアセンブリ(530)と、ハー ド・ブロック(494)とを備えた両走行方向テープ用薄膜式ヘッド・アセンブ リであって、 上記第1サブアセンブリ(520)は、第1基層(482)と、該基層上に形 成され複数の薄膜からなる第1薄膜構成部(484)と、該薄膜構成部を覆う第 1絶縁層(490)とを備え、第1薄膜構成部は、複数の読み取り用エレメント からなる第1読み取り用エレメント(486)と、複数の書き込み用エレメント からなる第1書き込み用エレメント(488)とを備え、 上記第2サブアセンブリ(530)は、第2基層(506)と、複数の薄膜か らなる第2薄膜構成部(500)と、該薄膜構成部を覆う第2絶縁層(498) とを備え、第2薄膜構成部は、複数の書き込み用エレメントからなる第2書き込 み用エレメント(502)と、複数の読み取り用エレメントからなる第2読み取 り用エレメント(504)とを備え、 上記ハード・ブロック(494)は、走行する磁気テープによる摩耗に対して 該ヘッド・アセンブリの耐摩耗性を向上させるべくヌープ硬度尺度で少なくとも 800の硬度を有しかつ上記第1,2サブアセンブリの間に設けられ、上記第1 ,2サブアセンブリは、第1サブアセンブリの実質的にすべての読み取り用エレ メントが磁気テープのヘッド・アセンブリを通過する走行方向に沿って第2サブ アセンブリの各書き込み用エレメントに対して整列するように方向付けられ、第 1サブアセンブリのすべての書き込み用エレメントは、上記走行方向に沿って第 2サブアセンブリの各読み取り用エレメントに対して整列する、テープの両走行 方向において読み/書き自在な両走行方向テープ用薄膜式ヘッド・アセンブリ( 580)。 6.第1積層部を有する読み取り用モジュール(32)と、第2積層部を有する 書き込み用モジュール(52)と、結合層(50)とを備えたテープ用磁気抵抗 性薄膜式ヘッドであって、 上記第1積層部は、基層(34)と、膜厚が小さい第1絶縁層(36)と、磁 気抵抗性(MR)感知層(38)と、少なくとも1つの伝導層(40)と、膜厚 が小さい第2絶縁層(44)と、シールド層(46)と、膜厚が大きい絶縁層( 48)とが順次積層されたものからなり、 上記第2積層部は、基層(54)と、膜厚が小さい第1絶縁層(56)と、伝 導層(58)と、膜厚が小さい第2絶縁層(64)と、ポール層(66)と、膜 厚が大きい絶縁層(68)とが順次積層されたものからなり、 上記結合層(50)は、上記読み取り用モジュールの上記膜厚が大きい絶縁層 と、上記書き込み用モジュールの上記膜厚が大きい絶縁層との間に設けられ、上 記読み取り用モジュールと上記書き込み用モジュールとは、磁気テープがテープ ・ヘッドを通過する走行方向に沿って整列しかつ互いに結合されたテープ用磁気 抵抗性薄膜式ヘッド(30)。 7.上記テープ用ヘッドは第1テープ用ヘッドであり、さらに、該第1ヘッドと 同一の第2テープ用ヘッド(130)と、該第2ヘッドを上記方向に対して逆向 きに上記第1ヘッドに結合するための手段(110)とを備え、これにより、テ ープの両走行方向に対して読み/書き自在なヘッド・アセンブリ80が構成され るようにした請求の範囲第6項記載のテープ用ヘッド。 8.上記ポール層と上記シールド層は、夫々、FeTaN又はCoZnNbから なる請求の範囲第6項記載のテープ用ヘッド。 9.上記絶縁層は、ダイヤモンド状炭素からなる請求の範囲第6項記載のテープ 用ヘッド。 10.薄膜構成部をウェハー上に形成する方法であって、 複数のリリーフ・スロットをウェハー(61)に形成して隆起したリッジを形 成するステップと、 伝導層(63)を上記ウェハー上に形成するステップと、 平滑層(65)を上記伝導層上に形成するステップと、 上記平滑層を上記隆起したリッジの水準に達するように研磨することにより、 上記伝導層の部分を露出させるステップと、 複数の薄膜構成部(67)が上記露出した伝導層の部分に接するように、該薄 膜構成部を上記ウェハー上に形成するステップと、 残りの平滑層を取り除くステップと、 膜厚が大きい絶縁層(68)を上記膜構造上に形成するステップとを有する、 薄膜構成部をウェハー上に形成する方法。
