Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 電子プログラムガイド用スケジュール地方化システムおよび方法 発明の分野 本発明は、電子テレビプログラムガイド（ＥＰＧ）に関する。特に、ユーザー の使用環境にとって無用なスケジュール情報を選択的に削除して全国規模のＥＰ Ｇスケジュールを「地方化」するためのシステムおよび方法に関する。 発明の背景 テレビ視聴者に便利な形態でスクリーン表示式のプログラム・スケジュール情 報を提供するＥＰＧシステムは周知である。いわゆるインタラクティブＥＰＧは 、ユーザーが、スケジュール情報を任意の順序で拾い読みし、現在またはそれ以 降の視聴のためにプログラムをオンスクリーン・メニューから選択し、ペイパー ビューのプログラムの指定を行い、更に必要に応じて他の有用な操作を行えるよ うに、制御できるようになっている。先進的なＥＰＧの例は、ベニントンら(Ben nington，et al)による「電子テレビプログラムガイド用スケジュール・システ ムおよび方法（“Electronic Television Program Guide Schedule System and Method”）」（以下、「ベニントン」とする）という題目の共願出願Ｎｏ．０８ ／１１９３６７の中に記載されている。これは参照により当出願に組入れる。 殆どのＥＰＧは、以下の基本的態様で動作する。すなわち、プログラム・スケ ジュール情報、また時にはアプリケーション・システム・ソフトウエアは、視聴 者の施設に配置されている装置（通常は「セットトップボックス」）に向けて、 放送、ケーブル、直接衛星放送、または他の適切な形式の送信方法によって、送 信される。セットトップボックスにはメモリがあり、プログラム・スケジュール 情報がその後の視聴のために保持される。セットトップボックスに記憶されたプ ログラム・スケジュール情報は、周期的に（すなわち、連続的、日ごと、１週ご と、或いは２週ごとに）更新される。セットトップボックスの中のプログラム化 されたマイクロコントローラは、視聴者のテレビ受信機と協同して、記憶された プログラム・スケジュール情報を表示し、ユーザーが発する信号に応えてＥＰＧ の他の機能を実行する。入手可能な機能は、特定のＥＰＧの洗練の度合いに依存 している。 現在、視聴者に入手可能なテレビ・プログラムは、視聴者の区域のサービス提 供業者に依存している。例えばアメリカ合衆国においては、ケーブル運用業者は 通常、地方政府から事業免許を与えられて特定の地域に対するケーブル運用サー ビスを提供している。これは一般的に、プログラム・スケジュールが地域によっ て変わることを意味する。 全国規模のプログラムガイド（例えば「ＴＶガイド［TV GUIDE］」のような） を発行する者にとっては、様々な地理的区域で加入している総てのサービス提供 業者に、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュールを単一の形で送信ができることが 便利であろう。全国規模プログラム・スケジュールを単一の形で送信することに よって、ＥＰＧ発行者は、スケジュール情報を行き先ごとに多重送信しなければ ならないような事態になったとしたら生じる、発送の費用と複雑な手間を避けら れるだろう。同時に、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給を、サービス提 供業者の発信機器を複雑にしたり費用を増やしたりせずに、各地域ごとに調整し て「地方化」することも望ましいであろう。 発明の要約 その他のものも含めてこれらの目的は、本発明のＥＰＧプログラム・スケジュ ール地方化システムおよび方法で達成される。このシステムおよび方法では、各 視聴者のセットトップボックスの中で実行されるスケジュール情報フィルタによ って、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給が「地方化」される。この地方 化フィルタによって、どのスケジュール情報が視聴者のサービス環境にとって適 切であるかが自動的に判別され、この判別に従ってその情報が記憶されるかまた ラム・スケジュール供給が単一であることは、送信時間を低減することで更なる 利点である。送信時間の低減は、スケジュール・データがより迅速に加入者に届 くことを意味する。本発明の他の実施例においては、地方化フィルタの一部は加 入者のヘッドエンドで行われるので、加入者のセットトップボックスをヘッドエ ンドに接続する媒体の送信帯域幅は自由になる。 図面の簡単な説明 図１は、本発明の実施例の概要図である。 図２は、本発明の地方化情報フィルタを示す。 望ましい実施例の詳細な説明 本発明のシステムおよび方法は、プログラム・スケジュール情報を記憶するた めの記憶装置と、メモリ管理ソフトウエアプログラムを本発明の種々のメモリ管 理機能に従って実行するためのプログラム化された処理装置と、現在の日付と時 刻のトラックを維持するためのクロックとを有する任意の適切なＥＰＧプラット フォーム上で実行することができる。本発明のプログラムは、別の記憶装置の中 、またはスケジュール情報のために用いられるのと同じ記憶装置の別の部分に記 憶することができる。本発明の情報フィルタ手順を遂行するプログラムの符号化 は、通常の技能を有するプログラマには明白なことである。 本発明を実行するための適切なプラットフォームは、上述のベニントンのＥＰ Ｇである。ベニントンの図１を参照すると、本発明のプログラムは、不揮発性メ モリＥＥＰＲＯＭ２０に負荷、記憶される。このプラットフォームのスケジュー ル情報は、ＤＲＡＭ１８に構築されるデータベースに記憶される。ベニントンで 説明されているように、プログラム・スケジュール情報を送り出し、受け取るの に、特別な送信プロトコルは必要ない。プログラム・スケジュール・データベー スの構築と組織化は、通常の技能を有する者には理解されるように、ルーチンタ スクである。 本発明のプログラムを実行するための適切な処理装置がマイクロコントローラ １６によって提供され、現在の日付と時刻が（スケジュール記録に対して比較す るために）クロック１９によって追随される。その他の適切なハードウエア構成 は、本発明に関連する技術に通じる当業者には容易に想定されることであろう。 本発明はＥＰＧの表示手段の詳細を示すことを目的としていないので、本発明へ の混乱を避けるために、かかる要素の動作については論じないことにする。 図１は、ケーブル・システムおよび全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給 を例として用いた、本発明の概要を示す。しかし、本発明は、以下で容易に明白 になるように、如何なる送信形態であっても使用できる。本発明は、特定の形態 の送信に向けられているものでもなく、また特定の範囲のプログラム・スケジュ ール供給に向けられているものでもない。図１を参照すると、全国規模の電子プ ログラム・スケジュール供給１０は、適切な送信装置（例えば、サテライト）で 視聴者のケーブル・ヘッドエンド・アンテナ２０に送信される。この全国規模の 電子プログラム・スケジュール供給１０によって、地域のＣＡＴＶ配給ネットワ ークが駆動される。この同一の全国規模の電子プログラム・スケジュール供給１ ０は、ＥＰＧ発行者が総てのサービス提供業者に対してスケジュールの受信と配 給のための適切な手配を施して、送出される。ＥＰＧスケジュール発行者が奉仕 する地理的条件は、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給を受容するサービ ス提供業者の到達範囲によってのみ局限される。本発明の好ましい実施例の或る ものにおいては、完全な新しいスケジュールが加入者に向けて、日ごと、１週ご と、或いはその他の周期で送出される。その他の好ましい実施例においては、シ ステムは、ＥＰＧの更新以前にも、完全な新しいスケジュールが送出されるべく 準備されるまで待ってはいない。その代わりに、プログラム・スケジュールに対 する小刻みな更新が連続的に加入者に送出される。この「周期的」動作モードで は、スケジュールの総てのデータが送出され終わると、即座にスケジュール・デ ータ更新の送信が始まる。継続的送信の各々には、ＥＰＧに既に記憶されている スケジュール情報の更新と共に、範囲が含む時間期間の最後に関する新しいデー タも含まれる。前回の送信以降無効になったスケジュール・データは一切送出さ れない。 ヘッドエンドに配置されている信号処理機器３０によって、最終ユーザーへ配 給ハブ４０を経由して配給するための受信信号の条件が整えられる。ここで、電 子プログラム・スケジュールの濾波が行われていないこと、また、ヘッドエンド には格別な機器が導入されなかったことに注意して欲しい。次に、配給ハブ４０ によって、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール１０が、配給ハブ４０が奉仕す る各加入者５０に配給される。スケジュール１０は視聴者の施設に配置されてい るセットトップボックス５２で受信される。ここでは、スケジュールは、視聴者 のテレビ受信機５４での表示のために本発明によって地方化されている。 ここで図２を参照すると、本発明の情報地方化フィルタ５３は、セットトップ ボックス５２で以下のように実行される。総合的な目的は、全国規模のプログラ ム・スケジュール１０を地方化版５５に変形することである。地方化版５５はそ の後、セットトップボックス記憶装置５６（ベニントンの図１ではＤＲＡＭ１６ と命名されている）に記憶される。この説明的な実施例では、情報地方化フィル タ５３はセットトップボックス上で動いているＥＰＧソフトウエア・プログラム で実行される。しかし濾波は、以下に述べる手順を実行するように構成された専 用のハードウエアで実行できる。当出願で述べているハードウエア版のフィルタ ・システムと方法については、当技術に通じる当業者には容易に理解されるとこ ろであろう。ハードウエアとソフトウエアを組み合わせたフィルタをもまた、用 いることができる。 セットトップボックス５２には、「グループ」の番号が指定される。好ましい 実施例においては、セットトップのグループには、視聴者の以下の項目に対応す るグループが含まれる。すなわち項目は、 −ケーブル運用業者（例えば、TCI） −地理的区域（例えば、コロラド） −特定のケーブル・システム（例えば、Mile Hi Cablevision） −ケーブル・ヘッドエンド（例えぱ、Denver headend） −特別のサービス料を支払う加入者（例えば、デンバー市内のケーブル・フラン チャイズ） −ＥＰＧソフトウエア版（デラックス仕様等） である。グループは、容易に識別されるためと、後述するその他の理由のために 、番号化される（例えば、ＥＰＧソフトウエア版＝２、地理的区域＝３、ケーブ ル運用業者＝４、ケーブル・システム＝５、ケーブル・ヘッドエンド＝６、加入 者グループ＝７等）。以下、「範囲」という語は、同一の形のグループの集合を 呼ぶために用いることにする。例えば、総てのケーブル運用業者に関しては、対 応する範囲内の特定のメンバーを呼ぶために「グループ」という語を用いること にする。これに加えて、各グループには、対応する範囲の特定のメンバーを識別 する目的で一定の範囲の番号が（例えば、１から２００までをケーブル運用業者 に、２０１から５００までを地理的区域という具合に）指定される。 スケジュール情報を最初に受信するのに先立って、各セットトップボックス５ ２に、セットトップボックス５２がそのメンバーである総ての特定のグループに 対応する１組のグループ番号が送られる。グループ番号を、ベニントンで論じら れている何れかの方法でセットトップボックスに送ることができる。この１組の グループ番号によって、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給に関するスケ ジュール情報を地方化する濾波条件が与えられる。これは、全国規模のプログラ ム・スケジュール供給１０の総てのプログラム・スケジュール・データにアドレ スを付け、データのグループ・アドレスを視聴者のセットトップボックス５２に 記憶されている１組のグループ番号と比較することによって可能となる。もしも このデータが、セットトップボックスに見付からないグループ番号のアドレスに 向けられていたとしたら、データは地方化フィルタ５３によって排除される。他 方、もしプログラム・データ・アドレスとセットトップボックスのグループ番号 との間に合致があれば、データは、視聴者サービス地域で入手可能なプログラム に相当し、したがって、プログラム・スケジュール・データベース５６に記憶さ れる。全国的な加入者総てに向けて意図されたデータは、グループ番号なしでア ドレスを付けられる。情報フィルタ５３は、かかるグループ番号なしでアドレス を付けられたデータの総てを通過させるように構成されている。視聴者の自身の サービス地域に対応するスケジュール情報のみが情報フィルタ５３によってＥＰ Ｇメモリに受け渡され、それにより、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給 １０が「地方化」される。同時に本発明では、視聴者のサービス環境にとっ て無用な、無関係のプログラム・スケジュール情報を排除することで、システム のメモリが保存される。 例示のために、プログラムの記述のような全国的に入手可能なプログラムに対 応するデータ項目がグループ番号なしでアドレスが呼ばれ、かかるデータがスケ ジュール・データベース５６に負荷されることが確かめられる。これと対照的に 、地方でのみ入手可能なプログラム化に対応するデータは、プログラムが入手可 能なレベルに共同する特異なグループ番号にアドレスを付けられる。同様なやり 方で、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給の総てのデータは、望ましい行 き先に対応するグループ番号を伴うことによってアドレスが指定される。 本発明の他の局面では、ＥＰＧのメモリ５６への記憶に先だって地方化フィル タ５３で濾波される各項目には、それが濾波された範囲番号で名が付けられる。 より大きな範囲番号は、上に示した例のように、より狭い範囲の目標データに対 して指定される（ケーブル・ヘッドエンド＝６に対して地理的区域＝３であるよ うに）。より大きな範囲番号は、より局地化（狭い）志向のデータがより有用性 が高いことを反映している。ここで用いられる特定のグループ番号は例示を目的 とするためだけのものであって、本発明の動作にとっては肝要なことではない。 対応する範囲番号で濾波されたデータに名付けすることは、同一のデータが２つ 以上の範囲に入るグループ番号で複数回送られる場合に有用である。この状況は 、ペイパービュー・プログラムに関する価格データがケーブル運用業者（範囲＝ ４）のサービス地域内のケーブル・システム（範囲＝５）によって変動するとこ ろで生じる。この状況においては、より狭い範囲向けのデータに対応する価格は 、より広い範囲向けのものよりも一層有用であろう。したがって、もしＥＰＧプ ログラムを実行するセットトップボックスのソフトウエアによって複数の価格デ ータのコピーが受信されたならば、最も狭い範囲の版のみ、すなわち、最も関心 があるデータのみが保存される。最も狭い範囲の版がプログラム・データベース ５６に既に負荷されているならば、異なる範囲の版は受信されると直ぐにフィル タ５３によって廃棄される。もしより広い範囲の版が最初に受信されたならば、 この版はより狭い範囲の版が受信されるまで保存される。より狭い範囲の版が受 信される時点で、より広い範囲の版はより狭い範囲を有する版に置換される。 本発明の別のもう１つ実施例においては、セットトップボックスで行われる濾 波の或るものは、ヘッドエンドで行われる。再び図１を参照すると、ヘッドエン ドに配置されている信号処理装置３０には、ヘッドエンドよりもより狭い範囲の データに対しては濾波が行われない点を除いて、ヘッドエンドに接続されている る頻度を高めることができる。これは、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供 給１０で送信されるデータを「終結させる」ことを意味する。これがまた、全国 規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給１０をヘッドエンドに送信するのにより遅 いデータ・レートを用いることを容易にし、費用を低減させる。 上述から明白なように、本発明により、柔軟性に富み費用効果の高い、全国規 模のプログラム・スケジュール供給を地方化するための装置が提供される。スケ ジュール配給ネットワークの先端まで濾波情報を配給することによって、本発明 により、多重の個別目標ごとの送信に伴って生じるであろう費用と複雑な手間が 省かれ、スケジュール情報を所定のレートで送信するのに必要な帯域幅が低減さ れる。 本発明を特定の実施例を参照することによって記載したが、以下の請求項に説
