Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a rare earth cobalt system permanent magnet consisting of an AB5 tyep and A2B17 type hexagonal crystal system intermetalic compound containing A1,2B4,8, where A is at least one member of a group consisting of Y, La, Ce, Pr, Sm and MM and B is Co or a combination of Co and at least one memmember of a group consisting of Mn, Fe, Cu, and Ni, is finely pulverized in an eventually pure state into mono-magnetic particles. A suitable quantity of oxygen is made to be contained in the mono-magnetic particles to form a hexagonal crystalline Co layer on the surface of the mono-magnetic particles, followed by compression and sintering to thereby obtain a rare earth Co cystem permanent magnet. Since a mixture of A2P3 type oxide and a hexagonal crystalline metalic Co is formed on the particle surface, that is, since the surface does not consist of A2O3 and CoO, the coercive force can be improved.
