Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A benzyl alcohol derivative of formula I: (R is H or lower alkyl group; X is halogen; n is an integer 1-3) or its pharmacologically acceptable acid addition salt.
EXAMPLE: α-(4-Methoxyphenethylaminoethyl)-2-chlorobenzyl alcohol hydrochloride.
USE: Pharmaceuticals having improved hypoglycemic action and an anti-agglutination action on the blood platelet.
PROCESS: A phenylglyoxal derivative of formula II or its hydrate is reacted with an amino compound of formula III to give an α-substituted iminoacetophenone derivative, whose carbonyl group and C=N double bond are reduced to hydroxymethylene group and C-N single bond to form the objective compound of formula I. The resulting compound is converted to an acid addition salt, if necessary.
