Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high quality blue dyestuff, economically, by the ultrafiltraction of crude extract of Spirulina.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous dispersion containing about 5% of Spirulina is centrifuged to afford crude extract having a solid content of about 2.3%. The crude extract is circulated at a flow rate of about 300 1/min. through an ultrafiltration device consisting of coaxial double tubes, wherein the inner tube is composed of a paper- like material coated with a synthetic high polymer. The extract is introduced into the inner tube with inlet- and outlet-pressures of about 3kg/cm2 and 1kg/cm2, respectively. The inorganic salts used in the crude extraction of the dyestuff, and the low-molecular water-soluble colored material (yellow) are removed from the extract, giving a clear concentrated solution of the blue dyestuff. The Spirulina is pref. Spirulina platensis, Spirulina geitleri, etc.
