Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an efficient method of treating superfluous activated sludge, which comprises the steps of dehydrating and thermally decomposing superfluous activated sludge, utilizing combustible gas thus formed as heat source for the thermal decomposition, and returning a portion of rsidues of thermal decomposition to the dehydrating process and the process in use of activated sludge.
CONSTITUTION: Waste water treated by way of sedimentation is introduced into aeration tank 2 via pipe 1 for treating the same with activated sludge, and then waste water is introduced into sedimentation tank 4 via pipe 3. Superfluous part of the sludge deposited in tank 4 is introduced via pipe 5 into mixing tank 6, where it is mixed with residues formed in thermal decomposition furnace 8. After dehydrating the mixture by dehydrator 7, it is introduced into thermal decomposition furnace 8 for thermally decomposing the same. Fombustible gas formed in furnace 8 is combusted at combustion furnace 9 and heat gas is passed through conduit 10 for utilizing the same as heat source for the thermal decomposition furnace 8. On the other hand, a portion of residues captured and separated by cyclone or other means is returned to the mixing tank 6 and aeration tank 2 via conduit 11, 12. In accordance with the above method, sedimentation of activated sludge and dehydration of superfluous sludge can be carried out efficiently by the returning of residues formed in furnace 8.
