Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare organic carboxylic acids such as methacrylic acid in high yield and high selectivity, by the hydrolysis of organic nitriles or organic acid amides, using a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Organic carboxylic acids are obtained by the hydrolysis of organic nitriles or organic acid amides with water in a liquid phase in the presence of an inorganic acid salt of tin (e.g. tin(IV) sulfate). In an example, methacrylic acid is obtained from methacrylonitrile or methacrylamide.
EFFECT: Polymerized by-products are not formed even in the case of producing unsaturated acids, and there is no problem of corrosion by acids.
