Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A phenoxyphenoxycrotonic acid derivative of formula I: (X is H or halogen; R is alkyl, haloalkyl, alkenyl, haloalkenyl, or alkynyl group).
EXAMPLE: Isopropyl γ-methyl-γ-[4-(4'-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenoxy]crotonate.
USE: Herbicides effective against true grass weeds, e.g. barnyard grass or Echinochloa oryzicola, having after effect, controlling subsequent weeds for a long time, and a stable effect. Safe for broadleaf crops, such as Japanese radishes and soybean, peanut, and cotton, most effective in foliar treatment.
PROCESS: A trifluoromethylphenoxyphenol derivative of formula II is reacted with a γ-halogenocrotonic acid derivative of formula III: (X1 is halogen) in the presence of a base to give the objective compound of formula I.
