Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the reaction between alkali metals and luminous bulb material during the operation of a lamp and elongate the use life of the lamp by forming a luminous bulb (filled with alkali metals and inert gases) of single crystal or polycrystal alumina.
CONSTITUTION: Saphier end caps 4 and 5 are sealed at the end of a saphire tube 3 made of transparent single crystal alumina by a sealng agent 6 to form a luminous bulb 7. The bulb 7 is filled with an excess amount of Cs8 and argon at several Torr. The transparency of the bulb 7 enables efficient utilization of the Cs specturm. Because saphire is highly resistant to alkali, it does not react with Cs8 during operation which, if occured, would result in reduction in light transmissivity and dissipation of Cs8. Thus the use life of the lamp is elongated.
