Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture carbide economically by using liquid or gaseous fuel by the procedure in which lime is supplied into the inside cylinder of rotary furnace and baked at high temperatures, and also a carbonacdeous substance in a definite amount is supplied into the outside cylinder of the furnace and added to the lime in the inside cylinder from a carbonaceous substance charging hole.
CONSTITUTION: The lime used includes quick lime, slaked lime, calcium carbonate, etc., and also the carbonaceous substance used includes anthracite, coke, coal, etc.. Lime is supplied from the lime feed pipe 8 into the inside cylinder 2 of a rotary furnace heated to a high temperature of 1800 to 2200°C by the internal mixing type multiple flow burner 8 into which a fuel, e.g., gas, heavy oil, fine coal powder, etc., and air and oxygen heated to 1000°C or so are separately fed and then baked at a temperature of more than 1800°C. The carbonaceous substance supplied from the carbonaceous substance feed pipe 9 is transported by the blade 5 provided on the interwall 3 and a transporter, e.g., waste gas, N2 gas, etc., in the furnace and then supplied in a C/CaO molal ratio of 2 to 4 on the basis of lime present in the inside cylinder 2 from the carbonaceous substance feed holes 6 provided at a position more than 1/3 of furnace length from the lime charging hole.
