Abstract

PURPOSE: To economically enhance the catalytic activity of a parallel flow catalyst by connecting gas passes through communicating holes made in walls of the catalyst to improve contact efficiency between exhaust gas and catlyst surfaces.
CONSTITUTION: When each gas pass 4 is not clogged with dust, exhaust gas G flows through each gas pass 4 almost parallelly. In this case, however, gas G in passes 4 interacts each other through communicating holes 3 and turns to turbulent flows, improving contact to catalyst walls 1a. When one of passes 4 is clogged with dust 5, causing blocking or insufficient gas flow, gas G flows into the clogged pass through adjacent gas passes 4 through holes 3. Since the gas flow directin does not change in this catalyst, dust is hardly accumulated. Yet even if dust is accumulated, no increase in press. loss occurs by the above action. Next communicating holes 3 are provided in the form of zigzag or the like before a position at which gas G turned to turbulent flows with first communicating holes 3 turns to laminar flows again.
