Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an aromatic polyester which finally becomes to a solid polydispersed state, suppressing the decomposition of the polymer and the abnormal distribution of the molecular weight, by carrying out the bulk polycondensation under shear force high enough to maintain the polydispersed state of the polymer.
CONSTITUTION: (1) A hydroxybenzoic acid is reacted with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (e.g. isophthalic acid, etc.) and an aromatic diol (e.g. hydroquinone, etc.) preferably at 180W250°C in a liquid or slurry state. (2) The polycondensation is continued preferably at 300W360°C and atmospheric to reduced pressure under shear force. (3) The polycondensation is further continued at a temperature below the fusion point (preferably at 310W370°C) under shear force capable of maintaining the solid polydispersing state until the whole system is substantially converted to the solid polydispersion, to give an aromatic polyester expressed by the formula (X is O, etc.; m and n are O or 1; p+q+r=3W600).
