Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a pitch composition useful for modifying a low grade coal to an excellent caking coal, by extracting bitumen with a solvent having specific solubility parameter, and distilling out the solvent from the extract.
CONSTITUTION: A pitch composition comprising (A) an insoluble component prepared by dissolving bitumen in a solvent having a solubility parameter of 7.0-8.5, e.g.n-hexane or (B) a component obtained by dissolving bitumen in a solvent having a solubility parameter of 9.0-11.0, e.g. pyridine, and distilling out the solvent from the solution containing the soluble component, or (C) a component obtained by dissolving bitumen in a solvent having a solubility parameter of 7.0-8.5, dissolving the insoluble component obtained above in a solvent having a solubility parameter of 9.0-11.0, and distilling out the solvent from the solution containing the soluble cmponent
