Abstract

PURPOSE: To assure stable combustion and improve the fuel consumption ratio of an internal combustion engine having a main and an accessory intake passages independent of each other, by causing a strong swirl in a combustion chamber under partial load on the engine.
CONSTITUTION: During the suction process, a thin mixture or a mixture containing a large amount of recycled exhaust gas is introduced into the combustion chamber 4 from the main intake passage through a main intake valve 5. Simultaneously, an accessory intake valve 19 is also opened and the same mixture is introduced into the combustion chamber through the accessory intake valve. Since a part of a valve port defined between a valve seat 18 and the periphery of the accessory intake valve 19 is closed by a semicylindrical wall 15, the mixture sucked into the combustion chamber 4 through the valve 19 preceeds in a recess 17. As a result, the strong swirl as shown by the arrow A is caused. Therefore, the combustion speed is increased and the stable combustion is performed.
