Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide the subject method wherein under a condition that the substrate load is sufficiently large or under that the substrate load is extremely small, the activity of activated sludge is obtained from the oxygen utilization velocity, whereby the activity of the activated sludge is measured from the measured value of the oxygen utilization velocity.
CONSTITUTION: Sewage is caused to flow from a crude solution tank 1 into an aeration tank 4. On the other hand, air is supplied from a supplier 2 into said aeration tank 4. Then, a mixture solution of activated sludge is subjected to precipitation treatment to extract precipitated sludge. A part of said precipitated sludge is returned to said aeration tank, and the remaining sludge is exhausted out of the system. Upon this occasion, the extracted sludge from said precipitation pond 5 and the sewage from the crude solution tank 1 are mixed with each other so that the oxygen utilization velocity of the activated sludge mixture solution assumes minimum or maximum state in such a degree that said oxygen utilization velocity does not become the function of the substrate load, whereby the oxygen utilization velocity of this mixture solution is measured, and the activity of the activated sludge is obtained on the basis of this measured value.
