Abstract

PURPOSE:To soak steel without use of fuel, by adiabatic soaking of hot ingot drawn from a mold in an insulated furnace in making ingot of rimmed steel or semi-killed steel. CONSTITUTION:In making ingot of rimmed steel or semi-killed steel, molten steel is drawn from the mold when the peripherel part has solidified and the central part has not yet solidified, then the steel ingot is charged into an insulated furnace, where it is adiabatically soaked. During the step from completion of pouring the steel into the mold until completion of charging the hot steel ingot to the insulated fornace, solidification ratio is set at 80% or lower. A definite time achedule is experimentally obtained previously according to the kind of steel and the quality of the material. When the solidification ratio comes to 90%, the hot steel ingot is taken out and transferred to the blooming step E. In place of the insulated furnce D, an insulated box D' may be used. This method is pref. from the energy-consumption-saving point of view because the fuel used for conventional soaking furnace becomes useless.
