Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a metal vapor discharge lamp, in which its getter assembly, that is heated with current supply when the lamp is lighted, is disposed within an outer bulb, whereby it is enabled to keep the getter assembly at a constant temperature, independently of the lighting direction of the lamp, and thus to operate the getter efficiently.
CONSTITUTION: Mercury and rare gas are sealed in a light emitting tube 1 made of quarz, and main electrodes 2, 3 are respectively disposed at opposite end portions of the tube 1. Further, an auxiliary electrode 4 is provided at one end portion of the tube 1. This light emitting tube 1 is in turn put in an outer bulb 5 made of glass. Getter assembly 12, connected in series to one main electrode 2, is obtained by shaping a getter metal such as Ti, Ti-Ni alloy, Ta, Zr, Zr-Al alloy or others into the form of foil or coil, and it is designed to be heated to a predetermined temperature when current is passed in the lamp. Further, the above getter assembly 12 is placed at such a position where it is less heated by the heat of tube 1, so that getter 12 can be kept at a substantially constant temperature.
