Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a display unit which will not deteriorate in contrast even if driving lines increase in number, by dynamically driving a liquid crystal, whose dielectric anisotropy becomes positive or negative depending upon the value of a frequency, through the two-frequency method.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid-crystal display element on the torsionally-nematic system employs an element whose longitudinal dielectric constant, i.e. dielectric anisotropy (ΔεfL) is positive at a frequency such as (fL) when frequency characteristics of the dielectric constant are below frequency (fc), and whose lateral dielectric constant, i.e. dielectric anisotropy (ΔεfH) is negative at frequency (fH) above (fc). Then, this is dynamically driven through the two-frequency method using the low-frequency component lower than (fc) and high-frequency component higher than (fc). In this case, appropriately selecting the ratio between (ΔεfH) and (ΔεfL) makes it possible to fix freely the ratio between the effective voltages in the lighting state and in the non-lighting state, and the contrast can be made sufficiently large even if the number of driving lines increases. In addition, a liquid-crystal composition material is preferable whose value of (fc) is within the extent from thousands to tens KHz.
