Abstract
PURPOSE: Bulk polymerization is conducted in the presence of a small amount of hydrogen sulfide to produce polymers of unsaturated carboxylate esters with good moldability and high heat stability.
CONSTITUTION: The bulk polymerization of an unsaturated carboxylate ester of the fourmula (R1 is H or other; R2 is 1W12C alkyl) such as methyl acrylate or a mixture consisting of over 80 wt% of the unsaturated carboxylate ester and less than 20 wt% of copolymerizable vinyl monomers such as styrene is carried out using 0.005W 0.5%, on the monomer mixture basis, of hydrogen sulfide at 100W200°C to produce the objective polymer.
EFFECT: The resulting polymer is odorless and colorless.
