Abstract

PURPOSE: The ring-opening polymerization of hexamethyleneimine is effected in the presence of a metal of group VIII in the periodic table to produce said polyhexamethyleneimines of both high and low polymerization degree in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The ring-opening polymerizaion of hexamethyleneimine is conducted in the presence of a metal and/or its compound of group VIII in the periodic table at a temperture of 50-300, perferably 120-220°C for usually longer than 5 min, preferably 15 min to 100 hr. As the metal of group VIII, nickel, palladium, platinum, and cobalt are preferred. The metal compound used as the catalyst is preferably capable of forming the metal element under the reaction conditions such as oxides, hydroxides, halides, salts of organic or inorganic acids of metals of group VIII.
