Abstract

PURPOSE: The title coating composition capable of giving films having improved hardness, with a low organic solvent content, comprising (A) an aqueous fine particle dispersion containing a specific water-soluble copolymer and (B) a water- soluble amino resin.
CONSTITUTION: A coating composition prepared by incorporating (A) 95W50 wt.% (solid content) of an aqueous fine particle dispersion and (B) 5W50 wt.% (solid content) of a water-soluble amino resin. The dispersion is obtained by emulsion polymerization of (a) 0.1W20 wt.% of an unsaturated compound of formula (R is H or methyl group; R' is 2W20C hydrocarbon group having an ether linkage in the straight or side chain; n is an integer 2W4) and (b) 99.9W80 wt. % of an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer, using a water-soluble copolymer having an acid value of 25W100 and a hydroxyl number of 10W150 which is obtained by neutralizing a copolymer, prepared by copolymerizing a mixture of an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, a hydroxyl group-containing α,β-unsaturated monomer, and a copolymerizable α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer in an organic solvent, with a basic substance as an emulsifier.
