Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a D-α-amino acid useful as a raw material of pharmaceuticals, in high efficiency, by hydrolyzing a 5-substituted hydantoin with microbials such as Moraxella, Arthrobacter, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Bacteria belonging to Moraxella, Paracoccus, or Arthrobacter genus, and capable of converting a 5-substituted hydantoin to a D-amino acid, e.g. Moraxella nonliquefaciens AJ11221 (FERM-P No.4348), Paracoccus denitrificans AJ 11222 (FERM-P No, 4349), Arthrobacter brazilus AJ 11223 (FERM-P No.4350), etc., are cultured in medium containing the 5-substituted hydantoin, or the bacterial cells or their treated product are brought into contact with the 5-substituted hydantion in an aqueous solution, to afford the D-α-amino acid.
