Abstract

PURPOSE: To uniformly attach a ferromagnetic substance to activated carbon by dipping the carbon in a soln. of an iron group element cpd. of a specific concn. and filtering the soln. after which the dipped carbon is calcined in an inert gas or a mixed gas of inert and reducing gases at a limited temp. and cooled.
CONSTITUTION: Activated carbon is dipped in a 0.5W1 mol soln. of an iron group element cpd. such as Fe(NO3)3 or FeCl3 and applied with ultrasonic waves. After filtering the soln., the dipped carbon is calcined in N2 or a mixed gas of N2 and H2 at 400W600°C for 1W4 hr, followed by cooling. The resulting ferromagnetic activated carbon is applied to the food industry and complete water treatment, e.g. removal of BOD, COD, ABS and coloring matter.
