Abstract

PURPOSE: To alkylate the ortho-position of a phenolic compound, selectively, with an alcohol in gaseous phase at a specific temp. using a composition containing a chromium oxide, a tin oxide and a sulfate as a catalyst having high activity and selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylphenol having one or more orthoalkyl groups, e.g. 2,6- xylenol, is obtained by the gaseous catalytic reaction of a phenolic compound having at least one H atom at the ortho-position, e.g. a compound of the formula (R1-4=H, aliphatic hydrocarbon group, e.g. methyl) with an alcohol at 250-500°C in the presence of a catalyst containing a chromium oxide, a tin oxide, and a sulfate, wherein the molar ratios of Cr2O3:SnO2: SO4 are 100:0.1:0.5W100:60:40.
EFFECT: The sulfate in the catalyst improves the catalytic life and suppresses the undesirable decomposition of the alcohol.
USE: Starting material for the preparation of polyphenylene oxide useful as a molding resin.
