Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high purity terephthalic acid for direct polymerization use, with low oxidation loss of acetic acid solvent, by immersing a crude product obtained by the relatively mild single stage oxidation of p-xylene, under specific temperatue and stirring conditions.
CONSTITUTION: p-Xylene is oxidized with an O2-containing gas in acetic acid solvent in the presence of a Co-Mn-Br catalyst, at a high temperature and pressure, and resulting crude terephthalic acid is purified by the immersion treatment with hot acetic acid solvent. The immersion treatment is carried out at 170-240°C, a stirring power of ≥1.0 HP/1 m3 of the suspension, and a linear velocity of the tip of stirring blade of ≥0.8 m/sec.
