PURPOSE: N-phenylphthalimide readily prepared from inexpensive phthalic anhydride and aniline is reduced with nascent hydrogen to produce title compound useful as synthetic intermediate for antiflammatory agent and others in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: N-phenylphthalimide resulting from the reaction between phthalic anhydride and aniline is reduced by nascent hydrogen using zinc and acetic acid and others to yield N-phenylphthalimidine of the formula wherein the amount of zinc used is 3W5 times the molar quantity of the phthalimide and the reaction is effected by stirring with heating to 20W150, preferably 120W130°C preferably for 5W5 hr and an inert solvent may be employed.
