Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently descale a hot rolled metal strip without using any acid at a low cost by cooling the strip at a predetermined cooling rate, followed by mechanical descaling and electrolysis in an electrolytic soln.
CONSTITUTION: Metal strip 2 uncoiled from uncoiler 1 is heated to above 300°C with heater 3, cooled with cooler 4 at a cooling rate above 20°C/sec, and fed to mechanically descaling unit 5. Strip 2 is then subjected to electrolytic reaction in cathode reaction vessel 6 using the strip as a cathode, and electrolytic reaction using the strip as an anode is carried out in anode reaction vessel 7 to descale the strip. The descaled strip is coiled roun coiler 10 through washer 8 and dryer 9. The above electrolytic treatments are pref. carried out in an electrolytic soln. of above 70°C, and it is advantageous that the strip is passed through the soln. after being cooled to around 150°C to utilize the potential heat of the strip.
