Abstract

PURPOSE: Innert gas is blown into molten metal of high silicon cast iron for degass treating. Then Mg or mischmetal is added to the molten metal to produce high silicon casting-use iron having high-strength, high-toughness, little of casting defects and high acid-resistance.
CONSTITUTION: Into the molten metal of high silicon cast iron containing C; 0.1 to 1.3% and Si; 13 to 16%, an innert gas such as Ar or N2 is blown to forcedly degas the molten metal, into which a single component or mixture of Mg and mischmetal is added in an amunt of 0.1 to 0.2%. Mg or mischmetal works causing the cast iron to form into finer crystal grain, and the graphite configuration in the cast iron to form into a high-strength minute eutectic state. Since the cast iron contains little gas, gas evolution is small, when it solidifies. This results in cast product having no such casting defects as blow holes or pin holes. The material brittleness usually increases with Si content added to enhance acid-resistance, but this is compensated by reinforcing effect of Mg and mischmetal.
