Abstract
PURPOSE: To hydroformylate an ethylenic unsaturated compound with CO and hydrogen, by using a specific catalyst which is excellent in separability and stability and can be prepared without using high pressure.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylenic unsaturated compounds are hydroformylated with CO and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst formed by the reaction of a nitrogen- containing heterocyclic compound having enolic hydroxyl group at a carbon atom adjacent to a ring-forming nitrogen atom, e.g. 2-hydroxypyridine (tautomer of 2- pyrrolidone), and a cobalt carbonyl compound, e.g. Co2(CO)8. For example, propionaldehyde is obtained from ethylene.
EFFECT: High pressure is not required in the preparation of the catalyst, and the catalyst is reusable repeatedly because it does not decompose even at low CO partial pressure.
