Abstract

PURPOSE: To selectively take out water or a oil-immiscible solvent in large quantities by treating a liquid of a specific compsn. consisting of oil, water or the solvent, and a surfactant with a porous membrane made of resin with a critical surface tension above a specific value and having a specific average pore diameter.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid consisting of X parts of oil and Y parts of liquid substances including Z mol/l of a surfactant is permeated through a porous membrance made of resin with a critical surface tension above 35 dyn/cm, e.g. PVA, PVC, nylon, cellulose acetate or their mixt. and having an average pore diameter of 0.005W5 μm. The compsn. of the above liquid satisfies Z>0 when 0.02≤α≤0.5, Z>1.78 × 10-3α-8.9×10-4 when 0.5≤α≤0.8, and α=X/(X+Y). In case of contg. a nonionic surfactant, the liquid is permeated at above 60°C. The permeated liquid is water or an oil-immiscible solvent alone.
