Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compounds, especially methacrylic acid, in high yield, by the vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of isobutyl aldehyde with molecular oxygen, in the presence of a highly active, highly selective catalyst comprising heteropolyacids composed mainly of phosphovanadomolybdic acid.
CONSTITUTION: The title compound is prepared by the vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of isobutyl aldehyde with molecular oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a heteropolyacid of formula (X is Cu, Sn, Th, Al, Fe, etc.; Y is K, Rb, etc.; when a=0, 0<b≤6, 0.5≤c≤6, 0<d≤ 3, 0≤e≤0.8 and f is defined by the values of aWe) or a mixture of the acid with a salt thereof. The catalyst is prepared by reacting a proper compound of the constituent element in a solvent, and evaporating the solution to dryness. The catalyst is pref. supported with a carrier to improve the heat resistance, life, and yield.
