Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:An ester compound of formula I (R, R' are 1W8C straight chain alkyl).
EXAMPLE: (2'-Cyano-4'-pentyl)phenyl 2-Chloro-4-propyloxybenzoate.
USE: A constituent of a liquid crystal mixture for display. Although the compound is not a liquid crystal by itself, it imparts a liquid crystal with dielectric anisotropy having a large absolute value.
PROCESS: The compound of formula I is prepared by condensing an acid chloride of formula II with a phenol of formula III.
