Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the leakage of a shaft sealing unit by aligning a plurality of annular members of O shape in cross section in parallel in axial direction and urging them via a cylinder arranged on the outer periphery to thereby increase the fluid velocity resistance of the fluid flowing through the gap therebetween.
CONSTITUTION: A plurality of annular members 3 of O shape in cross section are aligned axially of a shaft 1 in contact with each other. A cylinder 5 is provided to make contact with the outer peripheries of the members 3, and another cylinder 6 is arranged on the outer periphery of the cylinder 5 in a manner that both the cylinders 5 and 6 are extended in the inner peripheral direction thereof at both sides to thus form collars 7 and 8, respectively. Both the collars 7 and 8 axially urge the annular members 3 to engage the cylinder 6 with the inner periphery of the casing 2 to cause the inner periphery of the members 3 to approach the outer periphery of the shaft 1. The high pressure fluid in the casing 2 is decelerated while flowing through the gap 9 between the inner peripheries of the members 3 and the outer periphery of the shaft 1 and through the gaps 10 between the annular members 3 to thereby reduce the leakage of the fluid from the shaft sealing unit.
