Abstract

PURPOSE: To retain the sealability of a shaft sealing unit even if inner and outer pressure difference varies in both normal and reverse relations by sealing the shaft with a ring utilizing its elasticity on the outer periphery of an X-shaped flexible material annular member.
CONSTITUTION: An X-shaped annular member 7 made of flexible material is interposed between the side one surface 5 of a sealing ring 2 attached to the end of a casing 1 and the side end surface 6 of a sealing ring 4 fixed to a shaft 3, and a ring 8 utilizing its elasticity is engaged with the outer periphery of the ring 7. When the pressure at the fluid X becomes higher than that of the fluid Y, the annular member 7 is axially expanded by the ring 8 to strengthen the sealing pressure. Since the member 7 is made of flexible material and rotates with the shaft 3, it has high durability and vibration resistance and is durable against slurry or the like. Even if the sealing end surfaces 9, 10, 11 and 12 are worn, the annular member 7 is expanded by the ring 8 to thereby retain the sealability of the shaft sealing unit.
