Abstract

PURPOSE: To oxidize attracted substances and purify exhaust gas, by providing a strong voltge electrode in the exhaust passage of an engine in which fuel is injected into the cylinder of the engine and by applying a negative strong voltage to the electrode so that the unburned substances in the exhaust gas are attracted on the electrode and by setting the electrode at a high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A strong voltage electrode 5 made of a heat-resisting material and having a columnar reticulate construction is secured near the center of the interior of the exhaust passage 4 of a Diesel engine, directly-injected gasoline engine or the like. A strong voltage negative as to the body of the engine is applied from a power source 7 to the electrode 5 through a lead wire 9 which is insulated from the body of the engine by an insulating material 8. Carbon particles or the like, which are the main constituent of smoke in exhaust gas, which passes through the exhaust passage 4, are attracted on the strong voltage electrode 5. The electrode is heated by the high-temperature exhaust gas so that the attracted carbon particles are oxidized into carbon dioxide gas which is released to the outside. Therefore, the smoke in the exhaust gas is removed and the exhaust gas is purified.
