Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the development of stress-corrosion cracks by retaining compressive stress in the surface of steel pipe by the procedure in which a heat stress greater than the yielding strength of the material of steel pipe is produced on both inside and outside of the steel pipe and then the steel pipe is cooled continuously. CONSTITUTION:The outside of the welded junction 2 of the steel pipe 1 is provided with the cooler 3 and then the both sides of the cooler of the steel pipe are provided with the high-frequency induction heaters 4. Then, in and around the welded junction 2 are cooled, the both sides of the welded junction are heated, and at the same time the inside of the steel pipe 1 is cooled by flowing a cooling medium, e.g., water in the pipe. Thus, a temperature defference is brought about between the inside and outside of the wall 5 of the steel pipe 1, or in the thickwise direction, and between the portion 7 surrounded by the heaters 4 and the locally cooled portion 6 surrounded by the cooler 3, or in the radial direction of the steel pipe 1, whereby causing deformation to take place in the locally cooled portion 6. In this case, heat stresses are produced in the radial direction and in the thickwise direction of the pipe wall 5, and under such a condition, heating is stopped, the steel pipe 1 is restored to ordinary temperature, compressive stress is retained on the cooler 3 side and even on the other side, and stress-corrosion cracking is prevented.
