Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a high quality terephthalic acid suitable as the raw material for the direct polymerization process, economically, in one step, by the liquid phase catalytic oxidation of p-xylene in the presence of a specific catalyst and a specific amount of a 4W8C aliphatic carboxylic acid alkyl ester.
CONSTITUTION: High quality terephthalic acid useful as the raw material of polyethylene terephthalate by direct polymerization process, economically, in one step, under mild conditions, by the liquid phase catalytic oxidation of p-xylene with molecular oxygen, in acetic acid, in the presence of a catalyst containing a cobalt compound, a manganese compound and a bromine compound, under high pressure, pref. at 170W230°C adding 0.005W10mol%, pref. 0.01W1mol%, based on the p-xylene, of a 4W8C aliphatic carboxylic acid alkyl ester, pref. a 5W7C alkyl acetate, esp. butyl acetate, to the reaction system.
