Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce resin particles having high heat distortion temperature, by reacting a suspension prepared by suspending in an aqueous medium, a solution of a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer resin and a compound having a functional group which is reactive with a dicarbonyloxo group in a vinyl aromatic monomer.
CONSTITUTION: (A) 20W50pts.wt. of a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer resin containing 20W30wt% of a maleic anhydride component and having an average polymerization degree of 10W250, (B) 1W18wt% of a compound represented by the formula RX, wherein X is a functional group which is reactive with a dicarbonyloxo group and R is a residue of a fatty acid having one double bond, a (C) a polymerization catalyst are dissolved in (D) 72W32pts.wt. of a vinyl aromatic monomer. The resulting solution is suspended in an aqueous medium, and reacted to produce thermoplastic resin particles. The resin particles are made foamable by adding a blowing agent to the resin during or after the polymerization reaction.
